Abstract:
The invention provides a method of identifying nucleic acid molecules that contain cis acting nucleic acid elements. Also provided is a method of isolating nucleic acid binding factors. The invention also provides methods of identifying compounds that are cis acting nucleic acid element analogs, compounds that are nucleic acid binding factor analogs, compounds that selectively bind cis acting nucleic acid elements and compounds that selectively displace binding between a nucleic acid binding factor and a cis acting nucleic acid element or between nucleic acid binding factors. Also provided is a method of determining a binding state of a nucleic acid. Pluralities of isolated nucleic acid molecules containing cis acting nucleic acid elements, of isolated cis acting nucleic acid elements and of isolated nucleic acid binding factors are also provided. The invention further provides methods of treating pathological conditions using molecules of the invention to alter genetic activities of nucleic acids involved in pathological conditions.
Abstract:
A method and apparatus are disclosed for distinguishing noisy continuous tone document types from other document types such as halftone or text, in order to maintain reliable image segmentation. In both cases a Range of Video microclassifier is added to the other microclassifiers (Sij, estimated halftone frequency, etc.) to disqualify noisy continuous tone images from being incorrectly classified as other document types such as halftone or text document types.
Abstract:
Mesoscopic magnetic field sensors which can detect weak magnetic fields (typically 0.05 Tesla) over areas as small as tens of thousands of square nanometers (e.g. 40 nm×400 nm). The combination of enhanced magneto-resistance in an inhomogeneous high mobility semiconductor, having special electrode arrangements, with the use of island lithography, enables the production of special semiconductor/metal nano-composite structures, and has made possible the fabrication of an entirely new type of magnetic field sensor which exhibits very superior magneto-resistive behavior.
Abstract:
A system and method for processing image data converts a pixel of image data having a first resolution to a plurality of subpixels, the plurality of subpixels representing a second resolution, the second resolution being higher than the first resolution. The plurality of subpixels are thresholded to generate a group of subpixel values for each pixel and a threshold error value. It is then determined if the group of subpixel values from the thresholding process produce a pattern containing an isolated subpixel. If the group of subpixel values from the thresholding process produce a pattern containing an isolated subpixel, the group of subpixel vales is modified to produce a pattern without an isolated subpixel. The modification process produces a subpixel error value which is compensated for localized error before being diffused to adjacent pixels.
Abstract:
The present invention includes optical interconnection devices and optical interconnection systems. The invention also includes machines and instruments using those aspects of the invention. The invention may also be used to upgrade, repair, or retrofit existing machines or instruments, using methods and components known in the art. An optical interconnection device of the present invention utilizes a multiple-pass optical cell. This approach differs from previous approaches in that spatial light modulators are used in a White cell device or other multiple-pass optical configuration. In a spatial light modulator, each individual element typically only has two or three variations used to direct the light. Therefore, precise calibration is not needed. The light simply needs to be directed towards the appropriate arm of the optical cell, which utilizes a self-correcting mirror in order to direct a light stream to the next desired location in the system.
Abstract:
Recombinant DNA technology was used to clone encoding nucleic acids for the human alpha platelet-derived growth factor receptor (PDGF-R type alpha). Peptides corresponding to the predicted sequence of this type and of the PDGF-R type beta were used to elicit antibodies specific for either type of the PDGF-R. Immunoassays are described for determining the level of PDGF-R type alpha in biological samples with the PDGF-R type alpha-specific antibodies.
Abstract:
The present invention is a method and apparatus for automatically placing a first unknown image, such as an unknown fingerprint image, into one of a plurality of categories. The invention includes storing in a library a plurality of value series, each of which series is derived from the frequency representation of an image category. The categorization process and apparatus takes the frequency image of a first unknown pattern to create a first frequency image. The frequency image plane of the first (unknown) frequency image is divided into a plurality of frequency image plane regions. Each of the frequency image plane regions may be an angular segment radiating from the origin of the frequency image plane. A region value is assigned to each of the frequency image plane regions based on the total energy in the frequency image in that region. The region values for the first frequency image are combined to generate a first series of region values. The first series of region values is compared in a comparator with each of the stored value series. The comparator preferably performs a correlation function on the pattern or series of the regional values using the one dimensional frequency transform of the spatial representation of the pattern of series of regional values.
