Abstract:
A touch operated user interface having tactile feedback for use in connection with a universal remote control or universal remote control with cordless phone functionality is shown in Figure 13. Surface features are provided as part of or as an overlay (1300) to a touchable face area of the user interface in order to assist the user in locating key positions and/or to provide positive indication of key activation. The overlay is placed over a flexible electroluminescent panel (318) that provides a lighted indication and a plurality of dome switches (310) that function as keys.
Abstract:
A controlling device such as a remote control has programming for transmitting a signal response to a plurality of control environments, each environment including a signaling device. Each signaling device in receipt of the signal request sends a signal response having a unique ID which is chosen to be characteristically attenuated by the surroundings of the environment. Because the controlling device can only be in one environment at a given time, and given the attenuation characteristics of the signal response from each signaling device, only one signal response will be received by the controlling device in each environment. Location definitions associated with the received unique ID may be used by programming in the controlling device to recall saved devices states, commands sets, macros, and even to dynamically generate commands based on the location information.
Abstract:
A system and method for using an universal remote control to access extended operational functions of a device. A consumer causes the universal remote control to transmit a code data value selected from the library to a target device while observing the effect of the transmitted code data value an the target device. When the target device responds in a manner desired by the consumer, the consumer may tag the code data value that caused the desired effect and assign the tagged code data value to a programmable key an the universal remote control.
Abstract:
The present invention relates to a display device (11) comprising a receiver (13) and a transmitter (12) for wireless transfer of control signals and a processing unit (14), said processing unit (14) being responsive to remote control signals from a remote control unit (16). The present invention also relates to a method for wireless control of the function of at least one electronic device (17, 18) intended to be controlled by a display device (11). The present invention further relates to a computer-readable medium storing computer-executable components. The invention is based on the idea that, via the display device (11) and a visual display (15), the remote control unit (16) controls the function of at least one device (17, 18) located in the vicinity of the display device (11).
Abstract:
A user registers with a Web site to enable the downloading of an electronic program guide ("EPG") (40) to a portable device. The downloaded and displayable EPG includes a listing of programs from which the user may select a program interest (48). In response to receiving input from the user requesting that the program be recorded, data indicative of the recording request is stored in the portable device (10). Then, when it is determined that the portable device is able to establish communication with the appliance (either directly or via an intermediate PC), the data indicative to the recording request is provided to the appliance to effect the recording of the program (34).
Abstract:
A method and apparatus that gives a human user universal control of electronic devices. The apparatus includes a local display device having a simulation viewer program for simulating controls of the electronice device on a display, where the simulation is generated based on a simulation configuration file associated with each electronic device. The local display device loads the simulation configuration file of a selected electronic device communicating on a communications network and simulates the controls of the electronic device associated with the loaded simulation configuration. The communications network is preferably a wireless network using a Bluetooth communications protocol. When a user selects an identifier on the local display device designating a particular electronic device, the simulation viewer program requests and receives from the electronic device, the simulation configuration file that allows the simulation viewer program to simulation the appearance and functions of the electronic device on the local display device.
Abstract:
A system and method for using a remote control device to simulate a skip search operation on a consumer appliance playing a recorded media. In response to a sensed activation of a skip search button (402), the remote control transmits at least one recorded media shuttle command to the consumer appliance and, after waiting a period of time (404), transmits an additional command (405) to the consumer appliance to cause the recorded media to resume playback at a standard speed. When the media shuttle command (403) is a fast forward command, the simulated skip search is effective for forwarding past timed portions of the recorded media. When the media shuttle command is a rewind command (406), the simulated skip search is effective for replaying timed portions of the recorded media.
Abstract:
A universal programmable remote is programmed for being used with a specific apparatus. A sequence of test codes is sent to the apparatus until the apparatus responds. The test codes comprise tags that are sent along. The tags fall all within a same narrow frequency band. An STB that is eavesdropping on the transmission is receptive to that band. The STB identifies the last tag and enables a server to identify the complete set of codes for the apparatus based on the tag. Thereupon the set is downloaded and programmed in the remote.
Abstract:
An infrared hand-held remote control for handling a single or plural devices such as lights, shades, drapes and the like contains ergonomically selected and placed control buttons that are self-describing and easy to use. It allows explicit, easy-to-use control of different functions by providing for each function to be controlled vertically disposed discrete buttons that provide "all or nothing" control of some physical feature and similar, vertically disposed and horizontally aligned "adjust" buttons that allow for fine and continuous control of the physical quantities between the extremes or limits of the discrete button functions. Successive groups of buttons provide for the control of different appliances or devices, where each group of buttons is identified by easy to comprehend icon or alphabetic representations.
