A water soluble lubricant concentrate adapted to be admixed with water and a lubricant composition made therefrom which exhibit enhanced levels of lubricity and hard water stability and facilitate the transportation of containers on a conveyor. The concentrate and composition include:(a) an anionic surfactant selected from the group consisting of alpha olefin sulfonates, sulfonates of ethoxylated alcohols, alkyl aryl sulfonates, napthalene sulfonates and mixtures thereof;(b) a carrier for the anionic surfactant; and(c) a water soluble salt of aluminum selected from the group consisting of aluminum sulfate, aluminum nitrate, aluminum chloride, polyhydrates of potassium aluminum sulfate/aluminum sulfate complexes and mixtures thereof.

A lubricating oil additive is prepared by reacting a triglyceride with a basic nitrogen compound to form a reaction product, reacting said reaction product with an acidic molybdenum compound to form an intermediate reaction product, and reacting said intermediate reaction product with a sulfur compound to produce a lubricating oil additive.

Novel higher dialkyl dimethyl ammonium clays, of superior gellant effectiveness in oxygenated organic liquids, can be produced by the overtreatment of layer and chain type mineral clays via ion exchange reactions. For example, a layered dioctadecyl dimethyl ammonium montmorillonite, a superior gellant for alkyd resin based coatings, is prepared by the reaction of sodium montmorillonite with a 12 to 25% excess of the corresponding quaternary chloride beyond the known ion exchange capacity of the clay. The overtreatment is preferably carried out in a mixture of water and organic solvent which disperses the clay and dissolves the quaternary ammonium salt.

Substantially oil-free aqueous industrial fluids comprise (A) up to as much as 99.9 percent by weight water, (B) at least one substantially water-insoluble functional additive stably dispersed in the water and (C) at least one substantially water-soluble liquid organic dispersing agent, said dispersing agent being capable of dispersing said functional additive in said fluid and are useful as liquids in a variety of industrial applications, such as hydraulic systems and metal shaping operations. Typically, these compositions also contain at least one water-soluble polymeric thickener and at least one corrosion inhibitor. Methods for preparing these fluids from concentrates are also disclosed.

The present invention relates to the use, as hydraulic fluids or metalworking lubricants, of compositions having water as a base and improved extreme pressure lubricating and wear-preventing characteristics. The hydraulic fluids of the invention are nonflammable and comprise a synergistic combination of a phosphate ester and a sulfur-containing compound. The compositions can be thickened, if desired, using a polyglycol type thickener and can contain additives known to the art such as defoamers and corrosion inhibitors. Stable concentrates comprising the phosphate ester and sulfur-containing compound can be prepared.

A lubricating oil additive composition which imparts improved oxidaton properties to crankcase lubricants comprises an antioxidant selected from aromatic or alkyl sulfides and polysulfides, sulfurized olefins, sulfurized carboxylic acid esters and sulfurized ester-olefins, and a primary amine of the formula: ##STR1## wherein each A is independently hydrogen or alkyl, R is alkyl or alkenyl of at least 6 carbon atoms, R.sup.1 is an alkyl group of at least 2 carbon atoms, x is an integer from 2 to 4, y is 1 to 4, and Het forms with the N atom, a 5- or 6-membered heterocyclic ring optionally containing an additional N or O hetero atom. Lubricating oil compositions containing this additive composition are also disclosed. Zn dithiophosphates may, also, be used in the additive composition.
