    Abstract: A sequential information controller for use in combination with a computer comprising a slider bar, integrating standard velocity and direction indicators, and a control icon. The user controls the playback velocity and direction of the sequential information, such as video information, on the display of the computer through an interactive user interface, which works in combination with the computer's system software. The interface includes an interactive slider bar and an interactive control icon which are depicted within an operating window of the display. The slider bar includes both playback direction/velocity indicators and control buttons. The playback of video information is primarily controlled by manipulating the image of the control icon with respect to the image of the slider bar. The image of the control icon is that of a human-like hand, which holds the slider bar image in either its open or closed hand, depending on the desired playback mode, and can be moved along the length of the slider bar image by a control device, such as a mouse, to control the playback direction and velocity of the video information on the display. When the control icon's hand is open, the control icon is spring loaded from the stop playback position of the slider bar. To keep the control icon from automatically returning to the stop playback position when the control icon's hand is open, the user must continue to hold the control icon in position with the mouse. When the control icon's hand is closed, the control icon will remain at any position along the slider bar it is placed, until moved by operation of the mouse, or until returned to the spring-loaded mode and released by the mouse, thereby allowing it to spring back to the stop position. The mode of the control icon is modulated by positioning the cursor over the control icon, selecting the control icon, and moving the cursor either up or down. Moving the cursor down, when the hand is open, closes the hand and freezes the playback velocity at the speed selected when the hand was closed. Moving the cursor up, when the hand is closed, opens the hand and spring loads the control icon. The control icon can also be rapidly moved to different positions by simply clicking on the slide bar with the mouse, regardless of the mode of operation.

    Abstract: A floppy disk drive controller interface is disclosed which is implemented in an integrated circuit. The controller connects to a host computer data bus and one or more floppy disk drives. Based upon clocking and control signals received from a digital computer, the controller generates serial encoded data for recording on a floppy disk and receives serial encoded data previously recorded on a floppy disk. The controller comprises read control means 45 including a read data register, write control means 47 including a write data register, a mode register 31, a status register 33, state latches 39, a decoder 41 and special function registers 35,37. The controller operates by the setting and clearing of the state latches and reading or writing the mode register, the status register, the special function registers, the read data register and the write data register. The setting of a state latch and accessing of a register is done simultaneously. The controller, under software control, operates in a synchronous or asynchronous read/write mode, and low or fast read/write mode.

    Abstract: A personal computer system has a main circuit board with a central unit (1) and extension slots (29 - 34), each of which can take one printed circuit board (50). The main circuit board has a memory (2), a 32-bit address bus (10) and an input-output circuit (7). Each slot is connected to the 32-bit address bus (10), which is in the form of a NuBus bus, and has special means of identification control, which provide the slot with an identification number (S9) in the computer system. The computer system reserves 256 megabytes of memory space, from position SX0000000 to position SXFFFFFFF, as memory on a card with special number SX in a slot. The card contains decoders, which are connected to the slot to receive the identification number, and have the effect of reserving 256 megabytes of memory space for the card in the slot.

    Abstract: A method and apparatus for detecting an escape sequence to cause a modem to switch from a data transmission mode to a command mode. The escape sequence precedes a command instruction. The escape sequence comprises a first predetermined set of characters and a second predetermined set of characters. The method comprises the steps of temporarily storing in succession in a memory M characters received by the modem from a host computer; detecting whether the memory contains in contiguous manner the first and second sets of characters; leaving the modem in data transmission mode if the memory does not contain the contiguous occurrence of the first and second predetermined sets of characters; if the memory does contain the contiguous occurrence of the first and second predetermined sets of characters, detecting whether an end-of-instruction code is to be found in the N characters following the first and second contiguous predetermined sets of characters; leaving the modem in a transmission mode if the end-of-instruction code is not detected in said N characters; and if the end-of-instruction code is detected in said N characters, authorizing the modem to switch from data transmission mode to command mode.

    Abstract: A local area network is disclosed including apparatus and methods for transferring data between a plurality of data processing resources ("agents") coupled to a cable. In the preferred embodiment, a plurality of agents are coupled to a common cable for data transmission and reception. An agent newly coupled to the cable dynamically assigns itself a unique address on the cable to which other agents may send data. Once an agent has been assigned a final address, it may then transmit to, and receive data from, other agents on the cable. An agent desiring to send data to a receiving agent follows a three step handshake, wherein the sending agent transmits an "RTS" signal and within a predetermined time must receive a "CTS" signal from the receiving agent. The sending agent then transmits a data frame within a predetermined time after the CTS signal is received. The failure to detect a return CTS signal within the predetermined time denotes a collision condition. Re-transmission is attempted using a linear back off method which is adjusted based on previous cable traffic history.
