Abstract: An insulated beverage or food container or sleeve is produced with a foam layer disposed on an inner surface of a paper stock. A polymer shrink film layer is arranged in a position along an inside surface of the beverage container. The foam layer is sandwiched between the polymer shrink film layer and the paper stock and decreases the energy transfer between the beverage and the user's hands allowing the user to hold onto the container for an extended period of time without causing user discomfort or pain. The polymer shrink film layer is produced from a shrink film polymer having a percent shrink in the range of 30% or less, and more particularly a percent shrink range of 5 to 10%.

Abstract: This invention pertains to security paper and methods of making such security paper. The invention comprises a light-colored base paper (42) having a non-protection area of a first thickness, and a protection area of a second thickness on at least one major surface of the base paper (42) wherein the first thickness is greater than the second thickness. The base paper (42) comprises colorant (50) whereby the protection area exhibits a translucence when viewed using transmitted light, and exhibits the colorant as a darker color indication, relative to the non-protection area, when viewed using reflected light. Transmission of light through a combination of paper fibers and the colorant, both being disposed at the protection area, is discernibly different from the transmission of light through the non-protection areas of the base paper, when viewed with a human eye.

Abstract: A process of forming a population of microcapsules is described comprising a liquid hydrophilic core material and a wall material at least partially surrounding the core material. The liquid hydrophilic core material can be anionic, cationic, or neutral but polar. The microcapsule population is formed by providing liquid hydrophilic core material; providing an oil continuous phase which is low boiling and preferably nonflammable, the oil continuous phase comprising preferably one or more organic oil materials such as esters with chain length up to about 42 carbons. A mixture is formed by dispersing the liquid hydrophilic material in the oil continuous phase. Either an oil soluble or dispersible monofunctional amine acrylate or monofunctional amine methacrylate, along with acid; or alternatively monofunctional acid acrylate or monofunctional acid methacrylate along with base; or alternatively, monofunctional amine acrylate or monofunctional amine methacrylate along with acid acrylate or methacrylate; is added. A multifunctional acrylate or methacrylate monomer or oligomer is provided along with an initiator. Optionally a surfactant is also added to form the mixture. Emulsification is achieved by subjecting the mixture to high shear agitation and heating the mixture for a time sufficient to enable forming a prepolymer which migrates to the liquid hydrophilic material, thereby forming prepolymers adhered to the hydrophilic core materials. Heating is carried out or light exposure or both for a time and temperature sufficient to crosslink the prepolymers.

Abstract: The invention discloses a population of selected permeability microcapsule particles comprising an oil soluble or dispersible core material and a wall material at least partially surrounding the core material. The microcapsule wall material comprises the reaction product of a first composition in the presence of a second composition comprising an anionic emulsifier. The first composition comprises a reaction product of i) an oil soluble or dispersible amine with ii) a multifunctional acrylate or methacrylate monomer or oligomer, an oil soluble acid and an initiator. The anionic emulsifier comprises a water soluble or water dispersible acrylic acid alkyl acid copolymer, an optional initiator and an alkali or alkali salt. The reaction product of the first composition and second composition can result in the formation of a low permeability microcapsule wall. Optionally, one or both of the first composition initiator or water phase initiator is an energy-activated initiator, such as a UV initiator. The reaction can proceed by exposing the respective compositions to actinic radiation. Microcapsules of selected permeability can be produced by the process of the invention.

Abstract: The invention describes a heat sensitive recording material comprising a paper or film substrate having coated thereon a thermally sensitive color forming composition. The thermally sensitive color forming composition comprises a chromogenic dye precursor, and an acidic developer material. A high hydrolysis adhesive material is advantageously employed as a basecoat or in the color forming composition. The high hydrolysis adhesive material has a hydrolysis of at least 99% and yields a heat sensitive recording material of low background discoloration which is useful in wet offset UV cured printing.

Abstract: The invention teaches a novel paper substrate having a transparent field of a dense array of a plurality of laser-formed microperforations. The resultant paper can be useful as a replacement for glassine paper, and can be useful in secure documents. The transparent field is integral to the paper substrate and can be formed by laser techniques surprisingly resulting in a transparent field retaining acceptable strength characteristics after lasing. The transparent field acts as a self authentication device.
