    Abstract: A multi-state light modulating system (70) having grayscale based on a series of time intervals includes an arrangement that establishes (200) the duration of each time interval such that the time intervals in the series have progressively varying duration. The arrangement also determines a drive signal for each time interval that causes the light modulator to assume a specific light modulating state. The arrangement also causes the light modulator to produce a desired time-averaged light level over the series of time intervals by in part driving (214) the light modulator using the drive signal that corresponds to a particular time inverval for a duration that is longer (212) than the duration of the time interval. The arrangement also or alternatively arranges (210) the series of time intervals such that the light modulator is in the same state immediately prior to the particular time interval as the lights modulator is in immediately after the time interval.

    Abstract: A system for producing spatially modulated monochrome or color light having gray scale includes an active matrix liquid crystal spatial light modulator having light modulating means including (i) a layer of ferroelectric liquid crystal material which is designed to switch between ON an OFF states and (ii) active matrix means including VLSI circuitry for dividing the layer of liquid crystal material into an array of individual liquid crystal pixels and for causing each of the pixels of liquid crystal material to modulate light individually by switching between the ON and OFF states in a way that depends upon the data which the VLSI circuitry is written. The system also includes illumination means having a light source for directing light from the source into the pixel-divided layer of ferroelectric liquid crystal material in a specific way. And finally, the system includes means for writing the VLSI circuitry with preselected data in accordance with a particular data ordering scheme such that the circuitry, in response to the written data, causes the pixels of liquid crystal material to individually switch between their ON and OFF states and therefore modulate light from the source in a way which, depending upon the data, produces a specific overall pattern of gray scale light.

    Abstract: A dual-mode display system (20), for applications such as viewfinders/displays in a digital still camera or video camcorder, may include a single spatial light modulator microdisplay (22) that can be used both to provide a virtual image at a viewing location, such as near-eye viewing port (28), ant to provide a real image that can be projected onto a surface such as a projection screen (34). The projection screen may be on an exterior surface of the camera, it may be extendable from the device such as with a camcorder, or it may be an external screen such as a on a wall, desk, piece of paper, or a traditional projection screen. The optical paths for the near-eye and projection modes may be entirely different, with only the SLM (22) in common, or they be largely or entirely common paths. Different light sources may be used for the two modes, or it may be the same light source. The display system may switch between the two modes by selecting one of two different light sources or by moving an optical element, such as a lens or reflective surface (24).

    Abstract: A spatial light modulator (SLM) having a phase mask that is provided as an internal component thereof. The phase mask can be provided as a multilevel surface of relatively higher index of refraction material on an inner surface of a transmissive cover window or as a separate transmissive window between the cover window and the pixels of the SLM. If the phase mask is to be used with a liquid crystal SLM, then it may be desirable to planarize the surface of the cover window contacting the liquid crystal by providing a layer of relatively lower index of refraction material adjacent the multilevel surface. The phase mask can also be provided on the transmissive cover window by patterned ion deposition, exposing patterned light to a photopolymeric material, or in some other suitable fashion. Arranging for the pixel electrodes to be at one of multiple levels rather than lying in an exactly planar relationship can also effectively create the phase mask.
