Abstract:
Energy conversion among heat or electricity and incandescent light is achieved, in the case of incandescent light emission, with the emission having reduced IR content, using a high bandgap semiconductor element (1) that is tailored in structure and in energy conversion physics to suppress free carrier absorption so as to be transparent or reflecting of photon energy that is below the bandgap of the semiconductor and to only emit photon energy above the bandgap of the semiconductor. A filament of lightly 'N' doped 3C-Sic (2), at about 900 degrees C, will incandesce and radiate in the visible range for energies greater than about 2 eV and will exhibit inefficient emission of photons for energies less than about 2 eV.

Abstract:
Data associated with at least one building condition or status is sensed by one or more sensors. The data from these sensors may be sent over a data bus and received by the central computer. In addition, a modulated signal may be transmitted by one or both of the transmitters across the data bus. The modulated signal is received at the receiver, which analyzes the received modulated signal, and determines whether an intermittent fault has occurred on the data bus based upon the analyzing. For example, the receiver may compare the received signal to an expected pattern and when a discrepancy exists, an intermittent fault is determined to exist. The receiver may also determine the location of the fault based upon the analysis.
Abstract:
A nanolubricant composition is described where the lubricant composition includes a flowable oil or grease with nanoparticles dispersed in the flowable oil or grease. The nanoparticles are configured to polish a surface of a structure slowly over a period of time. The nanoparticles a hardness of at least about 7 Mohs and a diameter that is less than one half the arithmetic average roughness of the surface or a length that is less than one half of the arithmetic average roughness of the surface.
Abstract:
The methods provided herein are based on the discovery, as described in more detail herein, that aspartyl aminopeptidase (DAP) is expressed in mammalian pancreatic islet cells and that increased DAP expression results in decreased angiotensin II (Ang II) levels in the islet cells. Methods are provided for identifying compounds effective to increase the expression and/or activity of DAP in mammalian pancreatic islet cells and thereby are effective to decrease Ang II levels in the islet cells. Methods are also provided for decreasing Ang II levels in a subject having Ang II induced pancreas islet cell dysfunction and/or suffering or susceptible to type 1 diabetes, as well as for the treatment or prevention of type 1 diabetes comprising administering to the subject a therapeutically effective amount of the compound identified according to the methods herein.
Abstract:
Microcarriers, matrices and scaffolds for growing mammalian cells are provided which include copolymer particles and matrices comprising of polysaccharide-polyamine copolymers. The copolymeric particles and matrices have a pore size of at least 50 microns and permit the mammalian cells to grow both on an exterior surface of the particles and matrices and within an interior of the particles and matrices. Methods for making such microcarriers, matrices and scaffolds, and compositions are also provided. Methods for growing mammalian cells utilizing such microcarriers, matrices and scaffolds and compositions are also provided.
