Abstract: A cutting wheel assembly (100) for cutting elongated articles having a cylindrical housing (101) which defines a longitudinal cavity (102) and a circular outer periphery (103). A plurality of cutting blade support rings (180) are rotatably mounted about the outer periphery of the housing (101). A plurality of cutting blades (170) are mounted for radial mouvement on each ring and and disposed at angularly spaced increments about the housing, wherein each blade is moveable between a first, non-cutting position and a second, cutting positon. A manifold and valve assembly (130) is mounted in t he cavity and proximate the cutting blades for selectively directing a pulse of fluid against individual blades at preselected angular positions to urge the blades outwardly from the non-cutting position to the cutting position. A plurality of camming components (183) are positioned about the periphery of the housing and secured against rotation adjacent the rings. The camming components include tracking grooves (184) for receiving portions of the blad es which guide the blades along the cutting and non-cutting positions, and whic h maintain the blades in the cutting position without continued presence of th e fluid.

Abstract: A high speed mass flow food sorting apparatus and method comprises a product conveyor for receiving and conveying a laterally-distributed stream of bulk food articles past a product diverter. A camera is positioned to view the stream of food articles upstream of a product diverter. A sorting system downstream of the camera including a product diverter is configured to divert undesirable product in response to optically detected undesirable characteristics pursuant to an automated control system. The automated control system connects to the optical inspection system and the sorting system and includes an operator control console having a display and a screen-adjustable graphical slider usable for altering sorting characteristics corresponding to an undesirable optically detected characteristic so as to direct sorting of the undesirable food article during processing. Preferably, the operator control console displays a graphical user interface via a computer on which the control system is implemented and includes a software application pack specifically configured for processing a particular type of food article having corresponding desirable features, at least one having a corresponding screen-adjustable scaling image.

Abstract: A stabilizing system stabilizes light-weight articles carried on conveyors for automated bulk processing equipment. In a preferred embodiment, the light-weight articles, such as, for example, tobacco leaf products or wood chips, are moved and stabilized along a conveyor from a first infeed end to a second discharge end where they are projected in-air along a trajectory through an illumination station and sorting station. An enclosed off-belt housing is provided within which the light-weight articles are projected along a controlled trajectory to be processed by the optical inspection and sorting systems.

Abstract: The present invention relates to sorting apparatuses and sorting methods. According to one aspect of the present invention, a sorting apparatus includes an intake section configured to receive plural articles to be sorted; an exhaust section located downstream of the intake section; and an air manifold adjacent the intake section and positioned to emit an air stream in a generally downstream direction and wherein the articles move in a given direction of movement, and the emitted air stream sorts at least some articles from remaining articles and directs the at least some articles in the downstream direction from the intake section to the exhaust section. A sorting method according to one aspect of the invention includes providing a sorter; receiving plural articles to be sorted within the sorter; moving the articles along discrete courses of travel in a given direction within the sorter; subjecting the articles to an air stream substantially parallel to the direction of movement of the articles and in an area defined between the discrete courses of travel to sort at least some articles from remaining articles and wherein the sorting occurs in the area defined between the discrete courses of travel; and exhausting the at least some articles.

Abstract: Described herein is an automated quality inspection station for evaluating color component characteristics of a product. The inspection station includes a color video camera, for capturing video frames of product images, and a control system for analyzing those video frames. The control system is programmed to perform a reference calibration and then a sample calibration. During the reference calibration an operator identifies component type areas from a displayed reference frame of a typical product assortment. The control system calculates color value density curves from the identified areas. The density curves are then calibrated to each other by scaling each of the density curves by a scaling factor. The scaling factors can either be provided directly by the operator or default values can be calculated by the control system. Default scaling factor values are calculated by summing the product of the corresponding density curve and an overall histogram of a sample video frame over a range of color values. Individual pixels are classified as one of a plurality of component types according to the highest calibrated density curve at the pixels' color value.

Abstract: A sorting system is disclosed for reclaiming lean meat from high-fat meat trimmings. The sorting system includes a meat dicing machine which receives laterally extending whole meat trimmings and which dices such meat trimmings without grinding or extruding, and without disturbing the lateral distribution of the meat. This results in a lateral distribution of meat trimmings, without requiring vibratory distribution which is disfavored in meat processing plants. A wide-belt inspection conveyor is positioned at the downstream end of the meat dicing machine to receive the laterally distributed meat dices. The wide-belt inspection conveyor operates at a greater linear speed than does the meat dicingmachine to longitudinally space the meat dices from each other. An optical inspection and sorting station is positioned at the downstream end of the widebelt inspection conveyor to differentiate relatively lean meat dices from relatively fatty meat dices and to separate such meat dices from each other.
