Abstract: 1277762 Blood sampling apparatus MICROMEDIC SYSTEMS Inc 16 July 1969 [26 July 1968] 35716/69 Heading A5R Apparatus is provided for obtaining a blood sample from a patient's finger using a collector device 15, Fig. 11, of the type disclosed in Specification 1277761 having a tube 32 and a resilient funnel member 35 with incisor lancets 38a, 38b, the apparatus having a mounting 12, Fig. 2, having a through passage 12c in which the collector 15 is supported, a striker mechanism having a releasable member 17 adapted to strike a lower end of tube 32 to force lancets 38a, b into a patients' finger placed over funnel 35, a finger holder 8, and means for periodically varying the intensity of clamping of said holder. Holder 8 is pivoted at 7 and has a pin 8c which during pivoting of the holder engages member 17, to pivot the latter against springs 14, and then releases member 17 which consequently strikes tube 32. Holder 8 is retained in its clamping position by engagement of teeth 8f with a grooved rod 29 on a lever 25, the degree of clamping being varied by a massaging-type movement of a finger support 6 on a lever 19 driven through an eccentric by a motor. The first drops of impure blood are absorbed by a pad 40 in funnel 35, the remaining sample passing into tube 32 until a light beam, passing through tube 32 from a source to a photo cell in mounting 12, is interrupted, whereupon a solenoid coil 23 is energised and attracts an armature 22 on a lever 21, the end of which lever thus becomes engageable with a projection 19a on lever 19 to move levers 21 and 25 thus releasing holder 8 which is acted on by a return spring 11, the actuation of the solenoid also stopping the motor. Holder 8 may alternatively be released and the motor stopped via a push button 4. In an alternative embodiment, Figs. 13-16 (not shown) the finger is clamped and massaged between a fixed swell (45) on a casing (42) and a sponge pad (46) secured to a stirrup (41) pivoted on an eccentrically driven pin (43).

Abstract: 1,268,111. Linkwork; toothed gearing. MICROMEDIC SYSTEMS Inc. 1 April, 1969 [2 April, 1968; 19 Aug., 1968], No. 17068/69. Headings F2K and F2Q. [Also in Division F1] A pump 1a has a reciprocating piston 102 driven by a motor 4 through intermittent toothed-gearing, a variable-throw crank-mechanism 320 and a lever 339 pivoted at 340. The mechanism 320 has rotary members 332, 328 with slots 323, 329 housing an axially-movable spring-loaded blade 324 attached to a micrometer screw 601 and engaging with elements 334, 335 on an eccentric ball-bearing 333, which is coupled to the lever 339 by a rod 336 and ball 337: Rotation of the screw shifts the blade axially to change the eccentricity of the bearing. A counter 701 is coupled to the screw by a chain 703. The toothed gearing includes a pinion 14 having a frictional torque-limiting device, Fig. 8 (not shown), and meshing with a gear-wheel 301 having recesses 307, 307 1 aligned with a gear-wheel 306 coupled to the mechanism 320, the pinion being driven by the motor through speed-reducing gear 5. The recesses result in intermittent rotation of the wheel 306, arms 310 and pins 311, 311 1 being provided to turn said wheel into mesh with portions 308 between the recesses. The pinion also drives a second pump through gear-wheels that are identical to the gear-wheels 301, 306. In a second embodiment, Figs. 12 and 15, the variable-throw crank-mechanism includes a yoke 370 connected to a " slide " 368 in a pair of slideways 369 within a fixed sleeve 364, the slide engaging slidingly with a crank-pin 357 coupled pivotally to an axially-movable head 363 and a pin 359 in blocks that can slide axially in grooves 360 within a rotary member 356, which is driven by the motor through gearing similar to that shown in Figs. 1 and 2. Rotation of the member 356 makes the pin 357 revolve along an asymmetric conical-path (the pin being horizontal as shown only when at its uppermost position); and thus by shifting the head 363 axially by means of a micrometer screw 378 the stroke of the piston 135 is varied without affecting the top-dead-centre position. Arms 353, 355 effect intermittent rotation of a valve member 231.

Abstract: 1301342 Pipettes MICROMEDIC SYSTEMS Inc 23 Feb 1970 [26 Feb 1969] 8600/70 Heading BIX [Also in Divisions F1 and F2] In a pipette for precise metering of very small amounts of liquid, the plunger 14h is moved by rotation of a ring 4 which acts via a ratchet mechanism to rotate a sleeve 15 carrying a nut 15a which engages a screwthread 14e of a member 14 carrying the plunger 14h, the stroke of the plunger in each direction being independently adjustable by graduated rings 3, 5 which control the effective strokes of the ratchet pawls. The angular travel of the ring 4 remains constant. The plunger 14h moves in a straight portion 7a of an inlet/ outlet tube 7. A peg 9c in a tubular handle 9 engages an axial slot 14d of the member 14 to prevent rotation of the latter. A housing 12, rigid with the handle 9 and having an end cover 13, contains the ratchet mechanism. The sleeve 15 carries ratchet wheels 21, 22 having oppositely directed teeth. Diametrically opposite pawls 23, 24 engageable respectively with wheels 21, 22 are carried by a ring 25 pivoted at 26 to an annulus 27 of U-shaped cross-section rotatably supported in the housing 12. Tongues 12A-D (Fig. 5) of the housing act as drag brakes on the annulus. Pins 29a, 29b on the annulus 27 are engageable with a stop 28 to limit rotation of the annulus. A radial pin 25a of the ring 25 extends through a slot 124 to engage the ring 4. Diametrically opposite axial pins 30, 31 of the ring 25 extend through holes 27b, 27c of the annulus 27 and are engageable with cams 37, 36 rotatable in the housing 12 and connected by radial pins 36a, 37a to the rings 3, 5 respectively. Sprung ball detents between the rings 3, 5 respectively. Sprung ball detents between the rings 3, 5 and fixed rings 8A, 8B retain the rings 3, 5 in their selected positions, which determine the angular positions of the cam ring 36, 37. As the ring 4 is rotated over its full travel, carrying with it the ring 25 and annulus 27, the cams 36, 37 control the rocking of ring 25 about pivot 26 relative to the annulus 27 to determine the angle over which a pawl is drivingly engaged with its ratchet wheel. Pawl 23 and cam 36 are involved in the suction stroke during clockwise movement (Fig. 2) of the ring 4, and pawl 24 and cam 37 in the discharge stroke during anticlockwise movement. Either stroke is adjustable in steps from zero to a maximum. To fill the syringe completely, the ratchet drive is bypassed, the syringe being supported on a strand 41, (Fig. 15) so that the sleeve 15 can be rotated by a knob 50 acting via gears 48, (51), 52, (40), the gear (40) being rigid with the sleeve 15 (Fig. 1).

Abstract: Apparatus for repeatedly metering and dispensing, by means of a piston pump, predetermined quantities of liquid via a switching valve to which are connected inlet and outlet conduits for the liquid. The pump and the valve are actuated in timed relation by a drive mechanism powered by an electric motor which is controlled by selectively operable means that automatically cut off the motor supply once the piston has completed a stroke. There are also provided means for varying the length of the piston stroke to adjust the volume of said quantities and means for displaying to the outside a number indicative of this volume.
