The material 14 can be colloidal graphite held in grooves on the surfaces, contact being made by circumferential graphite regions 15. Graphite coatings 19 between the spacing rings intercept any leakage current between the discs. A filtered air inlet 11 is provided.

Abstract: 1522681 Controlling light NATIONAL RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT CORP 30 Dec 1975 [6 Jan 1975 26 June 1975] 496/75 and 27180/75 Heading G2F Nematic liquid crystal material with positive dielectric aristropy in a layer of thickness sufficient for surface introduction alignment effects to be unable to extend through its entire volume is selectively subjected either to a first field producing substantially uniform unidirectional molecular alignment, or to a second field producing a molecular alignment which provides a refractive index gradient capable of refracting light with a polarization direction in a plane containing the gradient, whereby the light may be deflected (e.g. the alignment of Fig. 3) or focused, Fig. 4. The alignments of Figs. 3 and 4 are obtained using four electrodes (at the corners of the figures) with the polarities shown. A magnetic field may be used in lieu of the electric field. An arrangement comprising eight electrodes at the corners of a cube, e.g. for two-dimensional deflection, is described. Instead of using spaced electrodes, potentials may be applied to each end of a resistive electrode strip.
