    Abstract: A method for determining Richardson Number, Ri, or its reciprocal, RRi, for clear air prediction using measured potential temperature and determining the vertical gradient of potential temperature, d theta /dz. Wind vector from the aircraft's instrumentation versus potential temperature dW/d theta is determined and multiplied by d theta /dz to obtain dW/dz. Richardson Number or its reciprocal is then determined from the relationship Ri = k [d theta DIVIDED dz + (dW DIVIDED dz) ] for use in detecting a trend toward a threshold value for the purpose of predicting clear air turbulence. Other equations for this basic relationship are disclosed together with the combination of other atmospheric observables using multiple regression techniques.

[Also in Division C4] Compositions for coating metals, particularly steel, by e.g. spraying comprise zinc dust and an aqueous potassium silicate of SiO 2 :K 2 O moll ratio 4.8-5.3:1. Preferably the compositions contain 56-82% by wt. zinc dust of particle size less than 50Á, 17.6-41% of an aqueous potassium silicate of 19-23% by wt. solids, and 0-3% of a lower alkyl alkoxysilane e.g. methyl trimethoxy silane. The steel surface may be pretreated with phosphoric acid or by sand blasting.
