    Abstract: Method and apparatus for detecting, by absorption spectroscopy, an isotopic ratio of a sample, by passing first and second laser beams of different frequencies through the sample. Two IR absorption cells are used, a first containing a reference gas of known isotopic ratio and the second containing a sample of unknown isotopic ratio. An interlacer or reflective chopper may be used so that as the laser frequencies are scanned the absorption of the sample cell and the reference cell are detected alternately. This ensures that the apparatus is continuously calibrated and rejects the baseline noise when phase sensitive detection is used.

    Abstract: The invention provides a technique for increasing the illumination intensity of probe light in a diffusely scattering sample 10 without increasing the power of the probe beam. Generally, an optical filter 30 is used which permits a collimated probe beam of light 14 to pass through to the sample, but which reflects back towards the sample much of the backscattered scattered probe light emerging at a wider range of angles. In particular embodiments a collimated laser beam is delivered to the sample through a multilayer dielectric filter covering a portion of the sample. The filter is transmissive to the laser light at normal incidence, but reflective at shallower angles of incidence characteristic of the backscattered light.

    Abstract: A mounting arrangement for an optical element, such as gain medium, for a laser, optical amplifier or other optical systems is disclosed. The mounting arrangement is applied to a vane assembly for cooling by a gas or liquid stream. The vane assembly comprises: an optical element (162); a vane plate (160) having an aperture, the optical element mounted in the aperture; and a retainer (170) arranged to fit between the optical element and the vane plate to provide a compressive force at the edge of the optical element to hold the optical element in the aperture. The retainer may be a resilient element or spring element. The retainer may be held in position using retaining rings. The optical element may be a Nd:YAG laser disc cooled by circulating He gas and the edge of the laser disc may be electrically heated to decrease the temperature gradient within the pumped laser disc.     Abstract: A sensor array comprising an array of pixels and a method of operating the same are disclosed. Each pixel of the sensor array comprises: a photodiode; a node arranged to develop a voltage based on charge accumulated at the photodiode due to photogeneration; and a first overflow unit 200 coupled to the node. The first overflow unit comprises a transistor and a capacitance. The sensor array is arranged to control the first overflow unit to accept overflow charge from the node into the capacitance of that overflow unit, and to subsequently read the overflow charge stored at the capacitance. Each pixel may comprise one or more further overflow units in series with the first overflow unit. The overflow units provide the sensor array with enhanced dynamic range. Also disclosed is a single pixel sensor with enhanced dynamic range. This arrangement results in a sensor array in which each pixel may have multiple capacitors. The arrangement also has readout circuitry 100 which can read the charge held by both the photodiode and overflow unit.
