Abstract: 23,562. Kelly, T. D. Oct. 17. Two- and four-strokecycle engines.- In an engine having one piston working in another and in which the outer piston works in a cylinder of two diameters, the pump spaces above the annular piston and the outer piston form a common compression chamber. As shown in Fig. 1, the pump space 12 and the annular space 16 communicates permanently through a passage 13. The engine works on a two-stroke cycle, admitting air or combustible mixture to the pump spaces through a port 15, the charges being transferred to the combustion space 17 through a passage 8 and a port 3 in the outer piston. By the provision at 15 of a rotary valve to control alternately the admission of combustible mixture and air, a two-stroke explosion cycle may be followed by a two-stroke air-scavenging cycle. According to a modified method of working, a rotary valve to control a supply of gas or mixture may be located in the pipe 13. By opening the valve late in the out-stroke, air drawn into the pipe 13 through the port 15 during the earlier portion of the stroke enters the combustion space in advance of the gas or mixture. In this case, the explosion cycle is followed by a scavenging- cycle if the valve in the pipe 15 is closed on alternate outstrokes.

Jackets and covers; tread projections.-In tyres of the kind described in Specification 11,859/12, in which metal segments F are fitted inside the cover, the segments are spaced apart at the ends, as shown in Fig. 2, and the spaces a are protected by inner metal or other plates b held in position by a canvas or like band c. The band c and segments F are secured to the cover by rivets or screws G, which carry anti-slipping studs E. The cover may contain an air-tube only, in which case the inner heads of the rivets are covered by a second canvas or like band, or it may contain rubber substitute or like elastic filling alone, or a filling and an air-tube as shown. The studs E may be of any material, and need not have metal casings.

Abstract: 8613. Kelly, T. D. April 6. Fibrous plastic compositions.-Relates to the manufacture of an india-rubber substitute, glue, or flexible cement. A seed, peat, husk, or plant " substance " is first made by boiling oil-bearing seeds, peat of a gummy nature, seed-husks, or plants containing cellulose in an alkali solution, such as lime, until a semi-plastic material is obtained. The fibre may, if desired, be strained off. The product obtained is then heated to a temperature of 450-600‹ F. with crude or oxidized vegetable oils, or in the case of " plant substance," with " seed substance," preferably in the proportions of 30 parts of the former to 70 of the latter, or in plaee of heating alone, the mixture may be heated at 100-200 F. with 30 parts of nitric acid or with a mixture of 3 parts of nitric acid and 1 part of sulphuric acid. The product may be further treated with a 3-5 per cent alkaline solution. When tung seed oil is used it is heated to 410- 600‹ F. and, while hot or after cooling, mixed with the peat, husk, or plant " substance." The products obtained are mixed with 1-5 per cent of sulphur or substances containing sulphur, such as potassium sulphate, and are then heated. A waterproof and fireproof cement is obtained by adding 10-30 per cent of chalk or cement.

A creamy product, obtained by boiling gummy peat, or certain seeds or plants, for example linseed and cotton seed, or marsh-mallow, respectively, in a solution of lime or other alkali, is mixed with petroleum, astringent liquor found near peat beds or the like, and sulphur or substances containing sulphur, such as potassium sulphate. The product is placed in moulds and compressed to form the object desired. When cold, it is ready for use. In preparing the creamy product, the peat or other vegetable fibre may or may not be strained off.
