Abstract: A multi air conditioning system for adjusting the amount of refrigerant flowing into indoor units (20,30) determined to be in a stopped state, to improve the overall system efficiency, and a method for operating the multi air conditioning system. The method includes determining whether or not some indoor units (20,30) are in a stopped state; measuring temperatures of heat exchangers (21,31) of the indoor units (20,30) in the stopped state; and changing opening degrees of valves (25,35) installed in those indoor units (20,30) determined to be in the stopped state to change the amount of refrigerant flowing therein if the temperatures of the heat exchangers of the stopped indoor units deviate from a reference range.

Abstract: PURPOSE: An air conditioner for securing appropriate refrigerant circulation regardless of an outdoor temperature in cooling leading operation is provided to prevent loss of heating capability of indoor units performing heating operation, thereby realizing reliable air conditioning. CONSTITUTION: An air conditioner has indoor units(29) performing cooling operation and heating operation for cooling and heating mixed operation. An outdoor unit(21) has a vapor-liquid mixing element(26) between a decompression element(25) of the outdoor unit and a liquid pipe(34). A high-pressure gas branch pipe(37) is branched between compressors(22) and outdoor heat exchangers(24) for moving a part of refrigerant discharged from the compressors in the cooling and heating mixed operation into the vapor-liquid mixing element as liquid refrigerant through the outdoor heat exchangers and the decompression element of the outdoor unit, and moving the rest of the refrigerant into the vapor-liquid mixing element as high-pressure gas refrigerant through the high-pressure gas branch pipe. The high-pressure gas refrigerant is mixed with the liquid refrigerant to be moved into a cooling and heating switching device as two-phase refrigerant. The cooling and heating switching device forms a vapor-liquid separator at the liquid pipe for flowing liquid refrigerant into the indoor units performing cooling operation and flowing high-pressure refrigerant into the indoor units performing heating operation.
