    Abstract: Cpds. (I) are of the formula:- (where Y = H, Cl or F, Xs may be same or different and = F or Cl; n = 0,1 or 2). The cpds. which are useful as heat transfer media, hydraulic fluids and dielectrics, may be obtd. by reacting (a) CFX2.CO.CFX2 with (b) SF5(CF2)n CY=CF2 under actinic radiation (e.g. high intensity U.V. light supplied by a mercury are vapour lamp), pref. at reaction temp. from -30 to 50 C with molar ratios of (a):(b) from 2.0:1 to 6.0:1. The mixt. of isomers thus obtd. can be separated by vapour phase chromatography. Intermediates (b) are described in US. 3131217.

    Abstract: 1,144,014. Fluorine-containing alcohols and aldehydes. ALLIED CHEMICAL CORP. 28 March, 1967 [1 April, 1966], No. 13993/67. Heading C2C. [Also in Division C5] Novel fluorine-containing hydroxy-propionaldehyde and propylene glycol derivatives of the formula HO-CR 1 R 2 .CR 3 R 4 .X, wherein X is a -CHO or -CH 2 OH group, R 1 and R 2 are perhaloalkyl radicals in which the halogen atoms are chlorine or fluorine and in which at least one fluorine atom is attached to each carbon atom, and R 3 and R 4 are hydrogen atoms or alkyl groups, are prepared by condensing aldehydes of the formula HR 1 R 2 .CHO with perhaloketones of the formula R 1 -CO-R 2 to give compounds of the above formula in which X is a -CHO group, and, if desired, reducing these to give the corresponding compounds in which X is a -CH 2 OH group. The above diols may be converted to the corresponding esters, e.g. 1,1 - bis - (perfluorormethyl) - propane - 1,3 - dibenzoate, which are useful as lubricants and heattransfer media, by treatment with acids, acid chlorides or acid anhydrides, or they may be reacted with dicarboxylic acid chlorides, phosgene or epichlorhydrin to give condensation polymers.
