Abstract:
An airbag module has a rigid cushion with an integrated inflator. The cushion has a rear cushion panel and the inflator may have a front inflator plate attached to the rear cushion panel. A rear inflator plate is optionally provided and may be positioned within the cushion or outside the cushion. A pyrotechnic may be disposed within the space between the front inflator plate and the rear cushion panel and/or the rear inflator plate. An initiator may be seated in the rear inflator plate and/or the rear cushion panel to initiate combustion of the pyrotechnic. Instead of the front inflator plate, the inflator may have an expanse of tape that secures the pyrotechnic and/or the initiator to the interior of the cushion. The pyrotechnic may be sealed by the tape or by a foil pouch. The initiator may be secured by the tape or rear inflator plate.
Abstract:
An airbag restrain system is disclosed for use in automotive protective systems. The airbag restraint system includes an inflatable airbag cushion having a tether coupled to the interior surface of the cushion. The airbag restraint system further includes first and second inflators for dual mode airbag cushion deployment. Upon a pre-impact condition, the first inflator deploys to partially inflate the cushion and release the tether. The second inflator also deploys to inflate the cushion to approximately full capacity. Upon an impact condition, only the second inflator deploys and the tether extends until taut to limit expansion of the cushion. Means are provided to retain and release the tether in response to the first inflator.
Abstract:
An airbag cushion is disclosed for use in automotive protective systems. The airbag cushion includes a vent that, prior to cushion deployment, extends from the cushion exterior. A tether is coupled to the vent and to an interior surface of the cushion. Upon airbag deployment, the tether extends until taut or extends until the cushion encounters an obstruction. If pulled taut, the tether pulls the vent into the cushion interior where the interior air pressure effectively closes the vent. If the cushion encounters an obstruction, the tether remains lax, and the vent remains on the cushion exterior. Means are provided for retaining the vent in the closed position during occupant ride down.
Abstract:
A toroidal-shaped adaptive output inflator is provided wherein the inflator includes a toroidal-shaped outer housing and an inner housing together defining an outer chamber and an inner chamber. A supply of gas-generating pyrotechnic material having a bum rate that is pressure dependent is contained within the outer chamber and at least a portion of the supply of gas-generating pyrotechnic material is reactable to generate a product gas. The inflator also includes a first plurality of apertures and a second plurality of apertures each formed in the inner housing, and each providing independent fluidic communication between the outer chamber and the inner chamber wherethrough at least a portion of the product gas can exit the outer chamber into the inner chamber. An output control device positioned within the inner chamber is movable or rotatable between a first or open position allowing fluidic communication between the outer chamber and the inner chamber through the first plurality of apertures and the second plurality of apertures, and a second or closed position at least partially obstructing fluidic communication between the outer chamber and the inner chamber through at least one of the first plurality of apertures. Also provided is a control assembly in operational control communication with the inflator and associated or related methods for adjusting inflation gas output from the inflator.
Abstract:
Abstract:

Abstract:
An adapter unit for a rigid knee airbag is provided. The adapter unit enables a rigid knee airbag to be in communication with an inflator having a diffuser portion for disseminating inflation fluid into the airbag. The rigid knee airbag includes a front panel and a back panel. The adapter unit may include an impression formed in the back panel. The inflator may include a male fastener attached to the diffuser portion of the inflator. The inflator may be inserted into a large orifice in a first substantially planar end portion of the impression such that the male fastener extends through a small orifice in a second substantially planar end portion of the impression. A female fastener may then be used to attach the inflator to the second substantially planar end portion. Alternatively, the adapter unit may include a housing that is similar to the impression formed in the back panel described above. Alternatively still, the adapter unit may include a raised portion formed in the back panel, the raised portion including an orifice having a diameter that is slightly smaller than the diameter of the diffuser portion of a disk inflator.
Abstract:
An assembly for supplying inflation fluid to an inflatable vehicle occupant restraint is provided which includes at least a first gas-supplying cartridge and a diffuser element having a base and a cap. The base forms at least first and second gas-supplying cartridge accepting sections. The first gas-supplying cartridge accepting section is adapted to accept the first gas-supplying cartridge in first inflation medium communicating relationship. The cap includes a plurality of outlet openings wherethrough inflation fluid can be emitted into fluid communication with the inflatable vehicle occupant restraint.
Abstract:
The assembly has a pair of gas supply cartridges (34a,34b) stored with inflation medium, which are mounted to the receiving sections of base in the diffuser element (36). The diffuser element has cap including multiple openings communicating with airbag (24). Bracket is provided to clamp the cartridge to base. The cartridges comprise two inflation medium supplying gases at different rates and quantities. The gases from cartridge are supplied at different point of time.
