Abstract: One aspect of the invention features a refrigerated display case door panel assembly. The panel assembly includes a vacuum-insulate glass (VIG) panel assembly, an additional pane of glass, and an electrically conductive coating disposed between the VIG panel assembly and the additional pane of glass. The VIG panel assembly includes two panes of glass bounding a sealed evacuated space between the panes. The additional pane of glass is laminated across one of the panes of glass of the VIG panel assembly to form a refrigerator side of the door. The electrically conductive coating extends across at least a majority of a viewing area of the door and is connected to an electrical conduit for electrically heating the coating to apply heat across the viewing area between the VIG panel assembly and the additional pane of glass.

Abstract: A display case door assembly for a temperature-controlled storage device includes a vacuum panel, a hinge rail, and a lighting element. The vacuum panel includes a first vacuum pane, a second vacuum pane, and an evacuated gap between the first and second vacuum panes. The evacuated gap provides thermal insulation for the vacuum panel. The hinge rail is coupled to an edge of the vacuum panel and configured to rotate along with the vacuum panel between an open position and a closed position. The lighting element is coupled to at least one of the edge rail and the vacuum panel and configured to emit light toward an interior of the temperature-controlled storage device when the hinge rail and vacuum panel are in at least the closed position.

Abstract: A display case door for a product storage device includes a transparent unit through which products within the product storage device are visible. The transparent unit includes a transparent LCD panel configured to present visual media content. The display case door further includes an electrical hinge pin rotatably coupling the display case door to the product storage device and one or more electrical conductors extending through the electrical hinge pin. The electrical conductors deliver the visual media content to the transparent LCD panel from a remote data source.

Abstract: A display system for a product storage device includes a transparent unit having a front panel, a rear panel, and a transparent LCD panel positioned between the front panel and the rear panel. The transparent LCD panel is configured to present visual media content. A lighting element is attached to the transparent unit and configured to provide lighting for both the transparent LCD panel and for products within the product storage device. The lighting element emits light in a direction away from the transparent LCD panel and toward the products within the product storage device. A light guide selectively reflects the light emitted from the lighting element back toward the transparent LCD panel and through the transparent LCD panel to provide backlighting for the transparent LCD panel.

Abstract: A frame assembly can be configured to couple one or more doors to a refrigeration case having an opening. The frame assembly can be mounted outside the opening of the refrigeration case, which can reduce the amount of energy needed for heating the frame assembly and doors to prevent condensation. Mounting the frame assembly outside the opening can also improve the uniformity of light used to illuminate goods displayed in the refrigeration case. Mounting the frame assembly outside the opening can also allow for the use of larger doors. In some embodiments, and adapter can be used to mount the frame assembly outside the opening. In some embodiments, refrigeration units having a frame assembly mounted in the opening can be retrofitted to include a frame assembly that is mounted outside the opening.
