Catalyst component comprising Mg, Ti, Hf, a halogen and, optionally, -OR groups where R is a C1-C20 hydrocarbon group, characterized in that (a) the Mg atoms are present in an amount higher than 7% based on the total weight of the said catalyst component, (b) the amount of Mg, Ti, and Hf atoms is such that the Mg/Ti molar ratio ranges from (3) to (25) and the Hf/Ti molar ratio is lower than 1.5 and (c) when -OR groups are present their amount is such that the -OR/Ti molar ratio is lower than (2).

Catalyst component for the polymerization of olefins obtainable by contacting: (i) a magnesium halide, or a suitable precursor; (ii) a monofunctional electron donor compound (MD) selected from ethers, esters, amines or ketones, used in such amounts to have Mg/MD molar ratios of at least 50; (iii) a titanium compound of formula Ti(ORI)n-yXy, where n is the valence of titanium, y is a number between 1 and n, X is halogen, and RI is a C1-C15 hydrocarbon group and, optionally, (iv) an electron donor compound (ED). The said catalyst component shows improved activity in the polymerization of olefins.

The invention relates to catalyst components, suitable for the preparation of homopolymers and copolymers of ethylene having a broad molecular weight distribution (MWD), which comprise Ti, Mg, Cl, and are characterized by the following properties: surface area, determined by BET method, of lower than 100 m2/g, a total porosity, measured by the mercury method, of higher than 0.25 cm3/g, a pore radius distribution such that at least 45% of the total porosity is due to pores with radius up to 0.1 νm.

A pre-polymerized catalyst component for the polymerization of olefins endowed with high activity and morphological stability comprises a non-stereospecific solid catalyst component containing Ti, Mg and a halogen, and an amount of an ethylene/alpha-olefin block (co)polymer ranging from 0.1 up to 5g per g of said solid catalyst component, said prepolymerized catalyst component being characterized by a mercury porosity, due to pores having radius up to 1 μm, ranging from 0.15 to 0.5 cm 3 /g and by the fact that at least 55% of said porosity is due to pores having pore radius up to 0.2μm.
