    Abstract: A gas-phase mixture of propene and oxygen is catalytically oxidized by passing a reactant gas mixture comprising propene and oxygen through a plurality of catalyst containing contact tubes in a fixed bed reactor and simultaneously passing only one heat-exchange medium at elevated temperature over the exterior surfaces of the contact tubes in a longitudinal flow pattern which is cocurrent with the direction of flow of the reactants through said tube; simultaneously superposing a transverse flow on said longitudinal flow of heat exchange medium by means of an arrangement of successive baffles along the contact tubes which leave passage cross-sections free, thereby resulting in a meandrous flow of the heat-exchange medium through the reactor and setting the flow rate of said heat-exchange medium so that its temperature between the point of entry of the medium into the reactor and its point of exit increases by 2 DEG to 10 DEG C.; and obtaining product acrolein at a selectivity >/=85 mol % from the reactor at a single pass propene conversion >/=90 mol %.

    Abstract: A process for the catalytic gas-phase oxidation of methacrolein to methacrylic acid in a fixed-bed reactor with contacting tubes, at elevated temperature on catalytically active oxides with a conversion of methacrolein for a single pass of from 40 to 95 mol%, wherein the reaction temperature in the flow direction along the contacting tubes in a first reaction zone from entry of the starting reaction gases containing the reactants into the contacting tubes is from 280 to 340 DEG C. until a methacrolein conversion of from 20 to 40% is reached, and the reaction temperature is subsequently reduced by a total of from 5 DEG to 40 DEG C., abruptly or successively in steps or continuously along the contacting tubes until a methacrolein conversion of from 45 to 95% has been reached, with the proviso that the reaction temperature in this second reaction zone is not lower than 260 DEG C.

    Abstract: A process for the catalytic gas-phase oxidation of acrolein to acrylic acid in a multiple contact tube fixed-bed reactor, with only one heat transfer medium being circulated through the space surrounding the contact tubes, at elevated temperature over catalytically active multimetal oxides at an acrolein conversion on a single pass of >/= 95 mol% and a selectivity of acrylic acid formation of >/= 90 mol%, in which the heat exchange medium on the one hand is passed longitudinally, viewed over the reaction vessel, to the contact tubes in cocurrent to the reaction gas mixture through the multiple contact tube fixed-bed reactor, and, on the other hand, has, within the reaction vessel, due to a successive arrangement, along the contact tubes, of deflecting discs which leave open cross-sections free, a superposed crossflow in such a way that, in longitudinal section through the contact tube bundle, a meander-like flow of the heat exchange medium results and the flow velocity of the circulated heat exchange medium is here set in such a way that the temperature of the heat exchange medium rises by from 2 to 10 DEG C from the inlet point to the reactor to the outlet point from the reactor.
