Abstract: Benzhydrylamine cpds. of formula (I): (where R1 and R2 are aliphatic or aromatic residues or NR1R2 is a heterocyclic ring; and each X (same or different) NR1R2 is a heterocyclic ring; and each X (same or different is H or halogen), e.g. N,N-dimethyl-2', 3-dichloro-2-methylbenzhydrylamine (which is claimed as a new cpd.) are prepd. by reacting dibenzylammonium salts of formula (II): (where Y is the anion of a mineral acid) with a nitrogen-free free basic alkali (ne earth) cpd. in the presence of water and/or organic solvent. (I) are inters for dyes, adjuvants and pesticides. Thus, treatment with strong oxidising agents gives halo-substd. aroylbenzoic can be obtained. Simple and economical process giving (I) in good yields and purity from readily available starting materials.
