    Abstract: High molecular weight polyphenylene ethers are prepared from monohydric phenols by an oxidative coupling reaction with oxygen in the presence of a catalyst complex obtained from a copper salt and an organic amine by a method wherein the metal component of the catalyst is separated off, after the polymerization, by the addition of a polymeric polycarboxylic acid which is essentially composed of unsaturated monofunctional or difunctional carboxylic acids and/or their anhydrides. Advantageously, the polymeric polycarboxylic acids used are homopolymers or copolymers of (a) from 50 to 100% by weight of one or more unsaturated monofunctional acids of 3 to 10 carbon atoms and/or one or more difunctional acids or their anhydrides of 4 to 6 carbon atoms and from 0 to 50% by weight of one or more monomers which do not possess an acid function and can be copolymerized with (a).

    Abstract: A process for the preparation of electrically conductive polymers by polymerizing acenaphthylene, N-vinyl-heterocyclics, eg. N-vinylcarbazole or N-vinylpyridine, or N,N-divinylaniline at from -80 DEG to +100 DEG C. in the presence of a cationtic catalyst, wherein from 1 to 50 percent by weight of an oxidizing Lewis acid, preferably FeCl3, FeBr3, SbCl5, SbF5, AsF5 or CF3-SO3H, or a combination of AlCl3 or TiCl4 with the said compounds or with CrO3 or OsO4 is used as the catalyst. In a preferred embodiment of the process, thin films of the monomers to be polymerized, applied to glass or to a polymeric base, preferably to a plastic film, are treated with gaseous SbCl5, SbF5 or AsF5. The conductive polymers obtained can be used in the electrical industry for the production of solar cells, for the conversion and fixing of radiation and for the production of electrical and magnetic switches, as well as for the antistatic treatment of plastics.

    Abstract: The invention relates to a flameproofed thermoplastic moulding compound containing a thermoplastic resin A and, in each case based on 100 parts by weight of the resin A, if appropriate an elastomer B, 5 to 50 parts by weight of at least one halogen-containing organic compound C (flame retardant) and, if appropriate, up to 20 parts by weight of a metal-containing or non-metal-containing compound (synergist) D. The flame retardant (C) used comprises brominated triarylamines of the general formula (I) where aryl represents a phenyl, naphthyl, anthracenyl, phenanthrenyl, fluorenyl or fluoranthenyl, biphenyl, triphenylenyl or acenaphthenylene radical and the radicals can be substituted if appropriate with alkyl, alkoxy or aryloxy, and where, furthermore, m, n and p represent integers with the proviso that m = 1-5, and n and p can be the same or different and can each have values from 0-5. The moulding compounds according to the invention are used for producing mouldings.
