Abstract: Ethylene, propylene, butene (1) or mixtures thereof are purified prior to polymerization by passage over beds of alumina or iron oxide at such a temperature in the range 50-200 DEG C. that between 0.0001 and 1% by weight is polymerized. The olefine may be passed from the top to the bottom of towers containing the catalyst, thus enabling the polymerized product and purified olefine to be separated at the bottom. The purified olefine may be partially recycled through the bed. Operating pressures of 1-300 atmospheres absolute are specified.
