Many examples of compounds (2) are specified, 4-hydroxy-butyl acrylate being preferred. The preferred examples of compound (3) are n-butyl acrylate and styrene. Many examples of optional (meth) acrylamides (4) are also specified; other ethylenically unsaturated monomers include vinyl acetate, propionate or pivalate, and nitriles or (meth) acrylic acid. The copolymers are preferably prepared by solution polymerization in organic solvents, e.g. methanol, ethanol, butanol, acetone, dioxane, tetrahydrofuran, or mixtures thereof with xylene, toluene or amyl acetate. Abstract: A composition for sizing staple yarns consists of, or contains, a polymer consisting of copolymerized units of (a) acrylonitrile, and (b) acrylic acid and its sodium or ammonium salt in the molar ratio of (a) : (b) of 1 : 1.5 to 1 : 7 and which, as determined in a 10% by weight aqueous solution at 20 DEG C. has a viscosity of 20 to 2000 c.p. and a pH value of 2.5 to 6.5, the said polymer containing from 0 to 20% by weight of copolymerized units of other monomers, said monomers being soluble in water at 20 DEG C. in an amount of at least 2% by weight. The other monomers employed are e.g. acrylamide, methacrylamide, methyl, acrylate, methacrylic acid or its alkali metal or ammonium salts, maleic acid or its salts or semi-esters, methacrylonitrile and vinyl pyrrolidone. The copolymers are prepared in aqueous solution by copolymerization of acrylonitrile and acrylic acid followed by partial neutralization of the copolymer with ammonium or sodium hydroxide, or by copolymerization of acrylonitrile, acrylic acid and sodium or ammonium acrylate. The aqueous solutions produced are used, after the addition, if desired, of conventional sizing agents such as the starch ether employed in Example 7, for the sizing of cellulosic and/or acrylic fibres (see Division D1).ALSO:A process for sizing staple yarns consisting of cellulosic fibres and/or acrylic fibres, or containing at least 30% by weight thereof, comprises applying to the fibres an aqueous liquor which contains in solution a polymer containing copolymerised units of (a) acrylonitrile and (b) acrylic acid and its sodium or ammonium salt and drying and treated yarn, the said polymer containing units of (a) and (b) in the molar ratio of from 1:1.5 to 1:7 and, as determined in a 10% by weight aqueous solution at 20 DEG C., having a viscosity of 20 to 2000 cp and a pH value of 2.5 to 6.5, and containing 0 to 20% by weight of copolymerised units of other monomers, said monomers being soluble in water at 20 DEG C. in an amount of at least 2% by weight. The sizing liquor may contain conventional agents e.g. the starch ether employed in Example 7. In the examples the sizing liquors are applied to cotton yarn, red-dyed acrylic fibres, pale blue rayon staple/acrylic fibre blend yarns, linen warps, staple rayon yarns and polyester fibre/cotton blend yarns.

Abstract: 1,132,267. Electrolytic coating compositions. BADISCHE ANILIN- & SODA-FABRIK A.G. 25 Feb., 1966 [27 Feb., 1965], No. 8333/66. Headings C3P and C3R. [Also in Division C7] Aqueous solutions or dispersions of salts of bakable basic nitrogen cationic polymers used for electrophoretic coating) comprise on a weight basis a copolymer derived from, (1) 3 to 30% of aminoalkyl acrylates and/or methacrylates; (2) 3 to 30% of amides, N-alkylamides, N- hydroxyalkylamides and/or N-oxaalkylamides of acrylic and/or methacrylic acid; (3) 40 to 94% of alkyl acrylates and/or methacrylates and/or styrene and/or alkylvinyl benzenes; and (4) 0 to 30% of other copolymerizable ethylenically unsaturated monomers. Component (4) may be, for example, an hydroxyalkyl acrylate or methacrylate, an aliphatic vinyl carboxylate ester, acrylonitrile, methacrylonitrile, or a trialkylammoniumalkyl acrylate or methacrylate salt. Other watersoluble or water-dispersible binders capable of electrophoretic co-deposition with the copolymer salts may be added in an amount of 10 to 70% of said salts by weight, e.g. aminoplasts, phenoplasts, epoxide resins, alkyd resins or mixtures thereof. In one example an 8% solids solution of pH 4À5 is obtained by diluting the copolymer salt solution obtained by adding acetic acid to a solution formed by solution polymerization of mono - (N,N - diethylamine) - ethyl methacrylate, N-2-oxa-4-methylpentylamide of methacrylic acid, and n- and tert-butyl acrylates in n-butanol and p-xylene. In another example acrylamide is used instead of the above amide and 4-hydroxybutyl acrylate is also included, together with TiO 2 pigment and a watersoluble melamine- or phenol-formaldehyde resin. A further example employs a copolymer derived from γ - (N :N - diethylamino) - propyl acrylate, 2 - oxapropylacrylamide, 2 - ethylhexyl methacrylate, styrene, p-vinyl toluene and acrylonitrile.

Abstract: Aqueous dispersions of highly polymeric esters which give alkali-resistant films are prepared by a process wherein 10 to 40 parts by weight of an acrylic or methacrylic ester of a branched chain alcohol with at least four carbon atoms and 90 to 60 parts by weight of a vinyl ester of a carboxylic acid with 2 to 18 carbon atoms are copolymerized in the presence of a protective colloid in aqueous dispersion by known methods. Specified monomers are tert. butyl acrylate and methacrylate, tert. amyl acrylate and methacrylate, ethylcyclo-hexyl acrylate and methacrylate and 2-ethylhexyl acrylate; and vinyl acetate, propionate, butyrate, hexoate, stearate and octadecylate. Specified protective colloids are acrylamide, methacrylamide and vinyl pyrrolidone polymers and copolymers, hydroxymethyl cellulose and hydroxyethyl cellulose. Emulsifiers may also be present. Polymerization may be effected in the presence of catalysts, e.g. hydrogen peroxide, potassium persulphate, ammonium persulphate, azo diisobutyramide, succinyl peroxide and redox systems. The dispersions may be compounded with softeners, pigments, e.g. barium sulphate and titanium dioxide, and other auxiliaries and used in the manufacture of paints. Examples describe the polymerization in the presence of potassium persulphate and an ethylene oxide adduct of sperm oil alcohol of (1) vinyl propionate and tert. butyl acrylate with a methacrylamide-vinyl pyrrolidone copolymer, (2) vinyl propionate and 2-ethylhexyl acrylate with a methacrylamide-vinyl pyrrolidone copolymer and (3) vinyl acetate and 2-ethylhexyl acrylate with an acrylamide-vinyl pyrrolidone copolymer.
