    Abstract: Unsaturated hydrocarbons, particularly ethylene, are produced by cracking liquid hydrocarbons by introducing the liquid hydrocarbon into a cylindrical reaction vessel close to the wall, introducing oxygen or an oxygencontaining gas tangentially close to the point of introduction of the hydrocarbon at a high speed sufficient to prevent a detachment from the inner wall of the vortex produced which is aided by passing the reaction gases through a conically-formed constriction and thence through either a cylindrical vessel or a vessel which first widens conically and is then preferably cylindrical. A mixture of oxygen and steam, combustion gas and/or recycle gas from tubes 4 and 5 is introduced through channel 6 and slot 3 at 80-200 metres per second faster than a petroleum fraction which is introduced through tube 7 under a slight excess pressure of 500-1000 mm. water. The gases pass from vessel 1 into vessel 2 through a conical constriction and the conical vessel 10 which preferably has a cone angle below 10 degrees. The products are quenched at 11. The reactor may be preheated by a combustion gas introduced at 9.

A heating tube 7 is provided with a coaxial burner tube 8 and an inner tube 9, the tubes 7 and 8 being supplied with air and fuel gas through pipe connections 3 and 25 respectively, and tube 9 terminating at the burner throat 12 in a conical member 15 supporting a glow plug 17, there being arranged on the outer surfaces of the tubes 8 and 9 annular constrictions 22 and 23 to first increase and then decrease the gas velocities. Openings 26 or tubes, Fig. 2 (not shown), in the burner tube permit the admission of from 5-35% of the air into the burner tube. A thermocouple 24 records the temperature at the burner throat 12.

A sportsground, playground or footpath comprises an elastic layer of particulate closedcell plastic 13 between a filter layer 12 and a covering layer 15. The elastic layer is preferably a homopolymer or copolymer of styrene or ethylene in spherical particles bound by bitumen, rubber, polyisobutylene, or copolymers of acrylic acid or vinyl chloride or vinylidene chloride or open-cell expanded plastic, such that the layer remains water permeable. The covering layer may be waterbound with a layer of cinders 14 below or asphalt and chippings. Where the covering layer is laid hot, a layer of chippings may be used as a heat insulator. Where it is desired to control the water content of the elastic surface, it may be placed in a trough, lined with a sheet 10 of polyisobutylene, having a base layer 11 of water-permeable dispersion bound rigid foam and an outlet pipe 17 with different water level maintaining stand pipes 19, 20, 21.
