Abstract: Recycling of ruthenium from an used ruthenium catalyst containing ruthenium as ruthenium oxide on a carrier material, which is hardly soluble in mineral acid, comprises treating the ruthenium oxide catalyst in a hydrogen stream, where the ruthenium oxide on the carrier is reduced to ruthenium metal; treating the carrier material containing ruthenium metal with hydrochloric acid in the presence of oxygen gas, where the metallic ruthenium, as ruthenium(III) chloride is dissolved to obtain ruthenium(III) chloride solution; and optionally treating the ruthenium(III) chloride solution.
