Abstract: A surgical instrument is disclosed. It comprises a handle; and an elongated shaft assembly extending distally from the handle. The elongated shaft assembly comprises a first tubular member including a first flexible portion with a first preferential bending direction; a second tubular member including s second flexible portion with a second preferential bending direction; and a third tubular member including a third flexible portion with a third preferential bending direction and a direction of bending resistance. The first tubular member, the second tubular member, and the third tubular member are coaxially located, and the third tubular member is moveable relative to the first tubular member and the second tubular member. The third tubular member prevents articulation of the first tubular member and the second tubular member when movement of the third tubular member aligns the direction of bending resistance with at least one of the first preferential bending direction and the second preferential bending direction.

Abstract: Surgical instruments and their methods of use are disclosed. In some embodiments, the surgical instrument may include a handle and an elongated shaft assembly extending distally from the handle. The surgical instrument may also include a fastener deployment system for deploying fasteners from the elongated shaft assembly including a reciprocating driveshaft disposed within the elongated shaft assembly. The driveshaft may include an internal channel and at least one guide surface shaped and arranged to maintain an orientation of at least one fastener in the channel of the driveshaft. In other embodiments, the fastener deployment system may include a follower disposed within the elongated shaft assembly for displacing one or more fasteners within the elongated shaft assembly towards a distal fastener deployment position.

Abstract: A surgical irrigation system comprises a reusable console and a disposable pump unit. The disposable pump unit includes a pump/motor module which includes a pump and a motor for driving the pump. The module is adapted to be mechanically supported within a seat in the console. The console produces a direct voltage at a pair of terminals within the seat. When the pump/motor is placed within the seat, the console terminals are connected to contacts on the module to provide a source of direct voltage for the pump motor. In the preferred embodiment, the disposable unit includes a handpiece and an irrigation valve. A flow sensing device within the outlet tube if the pump/motor module is actuated when the valve is open to turn the motor on and drive the pump. When the valve is closed, the flow sensing device turns the motor off.

Abstract: A handpiece (10) for a surgical irrigation and suction device includes a trigger operated valving mechanism which controls the release of irrigation fluid. The valving mechanism includes a flexible tube (38) which defines a portion of the irrigation conduit (40). The valving mechanism further includes a hook and rib arrangement (84, 86, 88) in which the flexible tube (38) can be drawn into a V-shaped kinked configuration which closes off flow through the tube. The spring (90) is connected to a trigger (24) which, when squeezed, shifts positions of the spring (90) to release the kink and permit liquid flow. An irrigation wand (16) may be provided with a special nozzle (108) which directs a plurality of streams of irrigation fluid in a single plane spray pattern. A retainer clip (74) may be provided to prevent inadvertent separation of the wands (16, 18).
