    Abstract: This invention relates to an image display apparatus capable of displaying a high-definition image. An image display apparatus of this invention is characterized in that light beams from a plurality of image display elements (1) are displayed as continuous single image information via a hologram optical element (2). An image display apparatus of this invention is characterized by including a plurality of image display elements respectively assigned to different partial image information regions of an image to be displayed, and a hologram optical element for diffracting a plurality of light beams from the plurality of image display elements, and displaying the diffracted light beams as continuous single image information. An image display apparatus is also characterized by including a plurality of image display elements, each of the image display elements having a large number of pixels, and a hologram optical element for forming a synthesized image by diffracting a plurality of image light beams from the image display elements, wherein the hologram optical element diffracts the plurality of image light beams so as to display a synthesized image by interpolating information between pixels of a plurality of images to be synthesized.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To provide a picture display device which is small in size, and light in weight, which can perform display on a large screen and which does not have crosstalk with respect to right and left eyes; and a stereoscopic picture display method and a picture display device in which 'screen effect' is not caused or reduced. CONSTITUTION:As to the picture display device; when a picture displayed on a picture display unit 2 is displayed as virtual images to an observer by a hologram lens 4, a hologram lens 4 has at least two kinds of optical power respectively corresponding to the right and left eyes 5 and 6 of the observer, the picture displayed on the picture display unit 2 is independently displayed to the respective right and left eyes 5 and 6 by superimposing and forming plural interference fringes on a part where effective luminous fluxes for the right and left eyes are superimposed on the hologram lens 4; and as to the stereoscopic picture display device displaying plural pictures having parallax on the respective right and left eyes 5 and 6 of the observer; a position in the depth direction of the picture displayed to the observer is temporally changed to be displayed or simultaneously displayed.
