Abstract: A liquid crystal apparatus, comprising: a liquid crystal cell comprising a pair of substrates (11a,b), and a chiral smectic liquid crystal (1) showing at least two different optically stable states formed by cooling from a uniaxial alignment phase and disposed between the substrates (11a,11b); and a polarizer (P) and an analyzer (A) disposed to sandwiched the liquid crystal cell; wherein the chiral smectic liquid crystal (1), polarizer (P) and analyzer (A) are disposed to satisfy any one of the following sets of conditions I - IV characterized by combination of X, Y and Z directions shown below: with proviso that the chiral smectic liquid crystal (1) is disposed so that the long axes of the chiral smectic liquid crystal molecules are aligned with a twist in the X direction along the direction from the polarizer (P) toward the analyzer (A) to form an average molecular long axis proving one optically stable state, and when the average molecular long axis is switched to provide another optically stable state latched in the Y direction with respect to the direction from the analyzer (A) toward the polarizer (P), the polarizer (P) is disposed to have an electric vector transmission axis which is substantially in the Z direction with respect to the average molecular long axis.

Abstract: A liquid crystal device is constituted by a pair of oppositely disposed substrates having opposing inner surfaces and opposing electrodes thereon, and a chiral smectic liquid crystal disposed between the opposing electrodes. The liquid crystal device has an effective optical modulation region (2) and a peripheral region (3) outside the effective optical modulation region. In the device, liquid crystal molecules in the peripheral region have a pretilt angle ( alpha 2) which is larger than a pretilt angle ( alpha 1) of liquid crystal molecules in the effective optical modulation region. As a result, a local pressure irregularity or a cell thickness change caused by a liquid crystal molecular movement along an extension of the device is effectively suppressed.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent the coloration of a cell by a fluctuation in the cell thickness of a liquid crystal display element formed by using chiral smectic liquid crystals. SOLUTION: Electrodes 12a are formed on a substrate 11a and an insulating film 13a having projecting parts on its substrate by coexistence of particulates 19 is formed thereon. An orientation control film having projecting parts on its surface by reflecting the projecting parts described above is further formed thereon. The films of the surface projecting parts are peeled and hole parts are formed at the orientation control film 14a by subjecting the orientation control film to a rubbing treatment. The parts where a pretilt angle turns zero are formed in these hole parts to prevent the movement of liquid crystal molecules.

Abstract: PURPOSE: To widen a driving margin and to make well display even under any use conditions by supplying scanning signals to the electrodes on a flattening film and supplying information signals corresponding to every color to information electrodes formed finer than these electrodes. CONSTITUTION: Color filters 3 are formed via an undercoating layer 2 on an insulating substrate 1a and the flattening layer 4 is formed thereon. Further, scanning electrodes consisting of striped transparent electrodes 6a and auxiliary electrodes 7a are formed via a barrier layer 5 on its surface. A shorting preventive layer 8a, a rough surface forming layer 9a and an oriented film 10a are formed thereon. On the other hand, the information electrodes consisting of the transparent electrodes 6b and auxiliary electrodes 7b finer than the scanning electrodes are formed on an insulating substrate 1b. A shorting preventive layer 8b, a rough surface forming layer and an oriented film 10b are formed thereon. Both substrates 1a, 1b are disposed to face each other and chiral smectic liquid crystals 13 are held between the substrates. The scanning electrodes are supplied to the scanning electrodes and the information signals corresponding to every color of the color filters 3 are supplied to the information electrodes.
