Abstract: A method is provided for fabrication of optical fibres with non-circular core cross section using the ICVD technique, by depositing layers of material which vary in thickness around the internal perimeter of each section of a reaction tube so as to form a preform which can be collapsed to a non-circular profile. The non-uniform thickness can be obtained by varying the profile or wall thickness of the reaction tube, or by selectively shielding the tube from a heat source, so as to vary the temperature at different points on the periphery of the tube during deposition.

Abstract: An elongate light conductor of circular or other cross-section is continuously produced by depositing, in a vacuum chamber, a powdered glassy (i.e. vitreous or vitrifiable) material upon the upper end of a descending rod of like material while training a stream of doping ions upon the same end. Vitrification may be assisted by an electron beam, also trained upon the powder-receiving rod end, and/or by thermal treatment of the rod leaving the vacuum chamber. The lower end of the rod is softened in a furnace from which a vitreous strand of reduced cross-section is continuously drawn through an orifice and wound upon a mandrel.

Abstract: The electric furnace has a solid graphite resistance element in an inert atmosphere. The resistance element (C) which forms the heating element is structured to obtain a highly concentrated heat zone with uniform temp. distribution. The structure is formed by a small solid graphite bar which is drilled and formed to present a pseudo annular part (CC) of constant wall thickness. This annular part (CC) forms the heat zone. To the annular part (CC) are connected current supply bars (A1, A2) via connections (R1, R2) which are designed to produce constant temp. distribution in the heat zone. The heating element is contained in a water cooled housing. Connections (L1, L2) maintain an inert gas pressure inside the housing. The housing has seats (S1, S2) for fixing two electrical terminals (M1, M2) connected to the heating element (C).
