Abstract: The invention relates to a programmable acousto-optical device in which an unknown input polarisation wave interacts successively with several different sound beams which are generated by piezoelectric transducers (T1 to T6) in one or more birefringent elasto-optical media. Said device comprises circuits for generating programmable discrete amplitude frequencies that are applied to the transducers (T1 to T6) and provides an output optical wave having a frequency spectrum amplitude modulation that is a function of both the input optical wave modulation and the sound wave modulation. The invention is particularly suitable for wavelength-multiplexed optical communication systems

Abstract: The acousto-optic device comprises a birefringent elasto-optic medium (1) equipped with a transducer (5). The transducer generates a modulated acoustic wave which interacts with an incident optical wave. The acousto-optic device comprises a birefringent elasto-optic medium (1) equipped with a transducer (5). The transducer generates in the medium (1) a modulated acoustic wave along a specific direction. Within the medium an input optical wave with unknown polarisation is coupled with the device. A programming circuit provides amplitude-phase-frequency modulation of the acoustic wave. The device provides a direct wave and two perpendicular diffracted waves of H,V polarisation, each bearing a modulation based on the input optical wave modulation and the acoustic wave modulation.
