Abstract: PURPOSE:To detect a trouble of oil leak by detecting the optical transmission characteristic of an optical fiber for a sensor consisting of a core layer and a resin clad layer that is swelled by oil immersion. CONSTITUTION:The periphery of a core layer 1 consisting of glass of little loss for light to be transmitted is enclosed by a clad layer 2 consisting of silicon resin or the like that is swelled by immersion in solvent, fuel oil, etc. and of lower refractive index for light than the core layer 1. And further, on its periphery an outer cover layer 3 of a porous structure is provided. An opticall fiber for a sensor 22 is arranged on an oil pipe 21 winding along the outer walls. At one end of it, a light pulse generator 23 is provided and input a prescribed optical signal constantly, and at the other end light is received by a light detecting device 24 for monitoring. When oil leak takes place, the optical fiber for the sensor 22 is wetted by the oil, which swells the resin clad layer through the outer cover layer of porous structure, where floating of the boundary plane between the core layer or a change in the refractive index is generated; thereby the light signal transmitted in the core layer is scattered and the transmission loss takes place.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To enable long-time continuous coating work by mixing resin with a curing agent immediately before coating the surface of a long-sized optical fiber with the resin in continuous coating. CONSTITUTION:When an optical fiber 2 is passed through the through hole 16 of a resin container 15 to form a protective resin coating on the surface, the container 15 is made a triple container obtd. by concentrically arranging a container 152 holding the 1st base 18 of coating resin, a container 153 holding a curing agent 19 and a container 154 holding the 2nd base 20 of the coating resin in succession around a central part 151 passing the optical fiber, and a concentric supply nozzle 17 leading to the containers 152, 153, 154 is attached to the hole 16. The tops of the containers are pressurized with a pressurizing mechanism to mix the bases 18, 20 with the curing agent 19 in the nozzle 17, and the surface of the fiber 2 is coated with the mixture. The bases and the curing agent exist separately in the containers, so the resin is not cured, and a resin coating can be formed continuously on the surface of the long-sized optical fiber for a long time.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To surely connect optical fibers to each other by a simple connecting stage while suppressing the size and cost of a connecting part to a lower level. SOLUTION: This optical fiber connecting mechanism is constituted by bringing the front ends of a ferrule 3a to which the optical fiber 2a is attached and a ferrule 3b to which the optical fiber 2b is attached into contact with each other, covering the contact portion with a split sleeve 5 and further, covering the outside thereof with a heat shrinkable tube 4. The heat shrinkable tube 4 is shrunk by heating the heat shrinkable tube 4 and the slit sleeve 5 is converged by the shrinkage force thereof, thereby, the ferrules 3a and 3b are fixed.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To easily position a single mode optical fiber and to shorten a connection time in respect to the improvement of a connecting method between an optical fiber and an optical waveguide. CONSTITUTION:A side core 5 having width almost equal to the core diameter of a multimode optical fiber is formed on a base 1 in parallel with the 1st optical waveguide 2-1 with the separation of a required pitch P and X/Y/Z adjusting boards respectively constituted of two stages are respectively arranged on both the sides of the base 1. The 1st single mode optical fiber 10 and a light projection side multimode optical fiber 30 are mounted on one X/Y/Z adjusting board, the 2nd single mode optical fiber 20 and a receiving side multimode optical fiber 40 are mounted on the other X/Y/Z adjusting board, the other adjusting board is adjusted so that the power of light projected from the fiber 40 is maximized, and then the positions of the fibers 10, 20 are successively adjusted.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To provide a process for production of the wide wavelength band optical coupler of an optical fiber fusion type which is smaller in the number of preparatory plans and the number of stages and is low in cost. CONSTITUTION:A pair of optical fibers 10, 20 are arrayed in tight contact with each other and are so held that the one optical fiber 10 aligns to the flame axial center C of a burner flame 9. The optical fibers are then heated and stretched and are fused by providing the one side optical fiber 10 with a reduced diameter part 10-1 smaller by a desired size than the diameter of the one side optical fiber 20; thereafter, either of the burner flame 9 or a pair of the optical fibers 10, 20 are moved to align the flame axial center C of the burner flame 9 and the central part of the fused part. The optical fibers are then further heated and stretched, by which both optical fibers are reduced in diameter and are fused.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To prevent the sectional shape of cores from changing to an undesired shape at the time of production by forming grooves having the shape of the cores on a clad glass and packing core glass having the softening point lower than the softening point of the clad glass into the grooves. CONSTITUTION:The grooves 14 having the shape corresponding to the shape of the core are formed on the clad glass 12 and the core glass 16 having the softening point of the temp. lower than the softening point of the clad glass 12 is formed on the clad glass 12 so as to be packed into the grooves 14. The 2nd clad glass 18 having the same refractive index as the refractive index of the clad glass 12 is superposed thereon and while the clad glass 18 is kept heated to the temp. higher than the softening point of the clad glass 16 and lower than the softening point of the clad glass 12, 18, the clad glass 18 is pressurized. Then, the unnecessary component of the softened clad glass 16 is extruded toward the lateral sides of the clad glass 12, 18 and, therefore, the cores having the shape meeting the shape of the grooves 14 is formed.
