Abstract: An apparatus is disclosed, including a first article, a second article, at least one interface structure, and a thermal break directly adjacent to the at least one interface structure. The first article includes a first material composition having a first thermal tolerance. The second article includes a second material composition having a second thermal tolerance greater than the first thermal tolerance. The first article and the second article are in contact with one another through the interface structure. The thermal break interrupts a thermal conduction path from the second article to the first article.

Abstract: An airfoil having a wall structure including a plurality of spaced walls for improved cooling and lifetime is disclosed. The airfoil and walls are made by additive manufacturing. The airfoil includes an exterior wall, an intermediate wall, and an interior wall each separated from adjacent walls by a plurality of standoff members; a plurality of outer cooling chambers defined between the exterior and intermediate walls, the chambers partitioned by an outer partition; a plurality of intermediate cooling chambers defined between the intermediate and interior walls, the chambers partitioned by an intermediate partition; a thermal barrier coating on each of the exterior wall and the intermediate wall; a first plurality of impingement openings through the intermediate wall; a second plurality of impingement openings through the interior wall; and a plurality of cooling passages through the exterior wall.

Abstract: An embodiment of an independent cooling circuit for selectively delivering cooling fluid to a component of a gas turbine system includes: at least one coolant feed channel fluidly coupled to a supply of cooling fluid; and an interconnected circuit of cooling channels, including: an interconnected circuit of cooling channels embedded within an exterior wall of the component; an impingement plate; and a plurality of feed tubes connecting the impingement plate to the exterior wall of the component and fluidly coupling a supply of cooling fluid to the interconnected circuit of cooling channels; wherein the cooling fluid flows through the plurality of feed tubes into the interconnected circuit of cooling channels only in response to a formation of a breach in the exterior wall of the component that exposes at least one of the cooling channels.

Abstract: A method may include: in a used metal turbomachine blade including a root including a shank, a platform coupled to the shank and an airfoil coupled to the platform, removing the airfoil, leaving a remaining base including the platform, the shank and the root. The method may also form a radially extending opening through the platform into the shank, and insert a ceramic shank nub extending from a ceramic airfoil into the radially extending opening of the remaining base. The ceramic airfoil is fixedly attached to the remaining base. The method allows reuse of the metal shank while providing the lower cooling requirements of a ceramic airfoil.

Abstract: Various embodiments include a metal-repaired ceramic matrix composite (CMC) article, and a method of repairing a CMC article having a defect. Particular embodiments include a method including: removing a defect-containing portion of the CMC article; forming at least one opening in a remaining portion of the CMC article; preparing a metal repair preform for replacing at least the removed portion of the CMC article, wherein a portion of the metal repair preform complements the at least one opening; and attaching the metal repair preform to the remaining portion of the CMC article.

Abstract: The present disclosure is directed to a method for forming a passage in a composite component. The method includes forming a cavity in a fiber preform. The cavity forms a portion of the passage. The method also includes inserting a core into the cavity and placing one or more fiber plies onto the fiber preform to form a fiber preform assembly. The method further includes thermally processing the fiber preform assembly and densifying the fiber preform assembly to form the composite component. The method also includes removing the core from the composite component.

Abstract: Apparatuses are disclosed including a first article, a second article, a sewing member and a thermal break. The second article includes a second material composition having a second thermal tolerance greater than a first thermal tolerance of a first material composition of the first article. The sealing member is disposed between and contacts the first article and the second article, and includes a third material composition having a third thermal tolerance less than the second thermal tolerance and less than an operating temperature of the second article. The thermal break is defined by the second article, and is proximate to the sealing member and partitioned from the sealing member by a portion of the second article. The thermal break interrupts a thermal conduction path from the second article to the sealing member. The first article and the second article compress the sealing member, forming a thermal gradient-tolerant seal.

Abstract: A turbine shroud assembly is disclosed including an inner shroud having a surface adjacent to a hot gas path, an outer shroud, a damper block disposed between the inner shroud and the outer shroud, a first biasing apparatus, and a second biasing apparatus. The first biasing apparatus provides a first biasing force to the inner shroud, biasing the inner shroud a first deflection distance in a direction toward the hot gas path and away from the outer shroud. The second biasing apparatus provides a second biasing force to the damper block, biasing the damper block a second deflection distance in a direction toward the hot gas path and away from the outer shroud. The second deflection distance is greater than the first deflection distance.

Abstract: A method for treating a field operated component is disclosed which includes providing the component including a ceramic matrix composite and removing a first portion of the component, forming a first exposed surface on the component. The method further includes providing a second portion including the composite, the second portion having a second exposed surface including a conformation adapted to mate with the first exposed surface. The second portion is positioned in association with the component so as to replace the first portion, and the second portion and the component are joined to form a treated component. Another method is disclosed wherein the component is a turbine component which further includes removing an environmental barrier coating from the component, arranging and conforming the first exposed surface and the second exposed surface to define a joint, and applying an environmental barrier coating to the treated component.
