Abstract: A computer program product is provided for performing: sending, by a channel subsystem, a process login (PRLI) request message to the control unit that indicates whether the channel subsystem supports bi-directional data transfer; receiving a PRLI response message from the control unit that indicates whether the control unit supports bi-directional data transfer; gathering a plurality of commands, at least one which specifies an input data transfer and at least one specifying an output data transfer; sending at least one output data message to the control unit including output data to be transferred to the control unit, the output data message associated with the at least one of the plurality of commands specifying an output data transfer; and receiving at least one input message from the control unit including input data to be stored in a main storage of the host computer system.

Abstract: A technique for establishing a logical path between two servers in a coordinated timing network of a processing environment is provided. The technique includes the exchange of command and response message pairs by a server and an attached server, via a physical link. The server transmits a command message to an attached server to establish a server-time-protocol (STP) logical path and receives a response from the attached server. The technique also includes the server receiving a request transmitted by the attached server to establish an STP logical path to the server and transmitting a response to the attached server's request. A logical path between the server and the attached server is established if the attached server's response indicates that the server's request was accepted by the attached server and if the server's response indicates that the attached server's request was accepted by the server.

Abstract: Server time protocol (STP) messages and methods of exchange thereof are p rovided for facilitating synchronization of processing units of a timing net work. The STP messages include exchange time parameters (XTP) commands and r esponses, and STP control (STC) commands and responses. XTP message exchange processing includes: generating an XTP message command at a first processin g unit including a command transmit timestamp field set bythe first processi ng unit and a command receive timestamp field which is unset by the first pr ocessing unit; transmitting the XTP message command to a second processing u nit; setting the command receive timestamp field in the XTP command with the time the XTP command is received at the second processing unit; and generat ing an XTP message response at the second processing unit, the message respo nse including the command transmit timestamp set by the first processing uni t and the command receive timestamp set by the second processing unit.
