Abstract: ACCESS TO FLOPPY DISK STACK A method and associated apparatus for positioning an auto-sustaining split precisely and quickly in a rotating stack of floppy type storage disks. Such split permits access to otherwise inaccessible storage surfaces facing the split and constrains these surfaces to circumferentially uniform rotational paths suitable for highest density storage. The ventilation pressure between the disks is set initially to a level above the threshold for formation of the autosustaining split. An externally transported air nozzle, positioned initially to estimated (coarse) coincidence with an axial component of a target cylindrical address, emits a pulsed jet of air into an aligned interface. This forms a partial split having a circumferentially irregular shape inappropriate for storage transducing access. The partial split forms more quickly than the auto-sustainable split and provides a wide relatively unvarying positional reference, by comparison to an unsplit interface. The partial split is thereby useful for precisely determining the displacement between said split and the target interface position. If a null displacement is detected the partial split is transformed into the auto-sustaining configuration by reduction of the ventilation pressure. Otherwise, the partial split is repositioned in small corrective increments, in the appropriate direction for nullifying the displacement, and the displacement is redetermined. The time required to form a partial split is much less than the time required to form an auto-sustaining split, and the average increment of access delay due to the corrective repositioning of the partial split is also relatively small. Progressively differentiable indicia on Successive disk edges facilitate determination of the split displacement.

Abstract: The invention herein provides for a bending moment to be induced in the deflected portion of a disk stack by providing a restraint on the outer surface of the outer disk of the deflected portion. The restraint is positioned in non-contacting close juxtaposition to the outer surface prior to insertion of the stack splitter and is positioned approximately 80.degree. to 100.degree. subsequent to the position of the splitter in the direction of disk rotation. The restraint, in a particular embodiment, extends from the outer periphery of the disk inwardly to approximately one-half to two-thirds the radius of the disk and covers an arcuate portion of the disk of approximately 20.degree.. The restraint is most effective when the disk contacting surface is provided with an airfoil shape to facilitate the formation of an air bearing when the outer disk is moved against the restraint. During the separation operation the outer disk is moved into bearing contact with the restraint and since the restraint is positioned only along the perimeter of the disk a bending moment condition is established which causes the outer disk (and the other deflected disks) to buckle between the axial direction of the splitter induced force on the disks and the forces imposed on the disks by the restraint. Typically the outer disk in the device is thicker than the other disks in order to provide a more suitable bearing surface.

Abstract: A blade with distinctive aerodynamic contours partitions the rotational path of a laminar configuration of continuously rotating flexible magnetic disc foils at randomly selected disc interface positions. The blade thrusts deeply into the pack with distinctively skewed motion gradually and progressively distorting the rotational path of the encountered random segment of discs. Air circulating under slight pressure through passages in the blade into the interface opening formed by the blade operates to suppress fluttering of the discs in the complementary (undeformed) segment.

Abstract: 876,837. Feeding sheets. INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORPORATION. Nov. 9, 1959 [Nov. 12, 1958], No. 37897/59. Class 100(1) Pile tables:-In apparatus for separating sheets from the top of a pile which is raised intermittently under the control of means responsive to the level of the top of the pile, two similar pile tables 28, 30 are provided which are positioned one above the other and mounted, respectively, on vertical posts 12, 13 for sliding and pivotal movements relative thereto, each table in operative position having an overrunning clutchdriven sprocket engaging and elevating chain and capable of being swung about its vertical post and positioned above (or below) the other table. The elevating chains 58, 62 are driven from a shaft 61 connected by a sprocket drive to a motor 68 which is controlled by a switch 84 in response to the level of the pile of sheets 85 being separated. The table 30, when in operative position adjacent the back plate 10, is in engagement with the chain 58 through sprocket 57 and a clutch 56 which allows manual raising of the table: when the table is swung away from the plate 10, the sprocket 57 is disengaged from the chain, and the table can be lowered and either swung back below the other table 28, or lowered completely and swung back, whereupon it is clear of the chain 58. The table 28 is similarly constructed or mounted. A new pile on the lower table 28 can be raised to engage the upper table 30, the latter then being swung outwardly to allow the remaining sheets thereon to fall on the new pile, without interrupting the sheet-separating operation. Each table is guided vertically by rollers, and is connected to counter weighting means including a clock spring 31 or 36. If the pile is raised too high, it pushes a plate 90 to close a switch 95 which drives the motor 68 in reverse to lower the pile. Sheet-separators:-The sheets are separated by a rubber &c. belt 77 mounted on a hexagonal pulley 71 and an ordinary pulley 75 which is driven, the frame of the device being pivoted at 74 and extended at 80 to co-operate with the switch 84 to control the height of the pile. The hexagonal pulley bounces on the pile to shingle the top sheets towards forwarding belts. Sheet-forwarders:-Separated sheets are fed between an upper belt 88 driven in a sheet forwarding direction, and a lower belt 89 driven relatively slowly in the opposite direction serving to-prevent feeding of more than one sheet at a time. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 763,832.
