    Abstract: A method for binarizing a gray-level input image (20) including a plurality of pixels having respective gray-level values. A lower threshold and an upper threshold are determined. A first binary value is assigned to the pixels in the gray-level image having gray-level values above the upper threshold (64) , and a second binary value is assigned to the pixels in the gray-level image having gray-level values below the lower threshold (62). The pixels in an intermediate group having gray-level values between the lower and upper thresholds are processed so as to determine optimal assignments of the pixel s in the intermediate group to the first and second binary values (66).

    Abstract: Apparatus and a method is described for correcting a set of stored digital representations of numbers having an estimable error probability distribution where there is at least one known arithmetic relation between the numbers which can be expressed as a sum, difference or equality. The invention finds particular, but not exclusive, application to the correction of optical character recognition (OCR) results. Hidden Markov Model optimization logic is employed for finding the most likely path through a set of states in accordance with probability functions recording the likelihood of transitions between the states giving rise to a set of event-related observations. The system is arranged so that the states are possible accumulated totals generated by adding or subtracting ones of the numbers to or from an initial accumulated total, addition or subtraction of the numbers to or from an accumulated total or equality of an accumulated total with the numbers are the events causing transitions from state to state, the digital representations are the event-related observations, and the error probability distributions are the probability functions, the apparatus comprising means to correct the digital representations in accordance with events giving rise to the most likely path through the states.

    Abstract: A system and method are disclosed for recognizing the type of an electronically stored image of a document. The method is composed by two parts: form signature computation, and signature matching. For form acquisition, signatures of forms are computed and stored in a template data base. For recognition, the signature of the input form is computed, and the best match between it and the signatures in the template data base is found. The input form is then considered to be the same as the form from which the best matching signature was computed.
