Abstract: In the illustrated embodiments a rotary head indexing cam has a power drive train releasably coupled therewith for automatic head indexing with a manual channel selector driven by the power drive train during automatic indexing while being manually operable to select a given channel independently of the drive train. A fine channel adjustment control is operable to shift the indexing cam axially for fine adjustment of head position relative to a selected channel. A latch retaining the capstan drive in operating position is mechanically released as the head completes scanning of a succession of chennels on the record tape. Capstan pressure rollers on hinged arms are swung through an open end of an endless loop cartridge to engage the record tape with the capstan, a predetermined bias being applied to the pressure rollers to press the same toward the capstan in the operating position.

Abstract: An offset carrier longitudinal scan recording and reproducing system for television signals wherein an amplitude modulated video signal is derived from a television receiver and converted to an offset carrier with a full upper sideband and an attenuated vestigial lower sideband. A direct or offset carrier audio signal may be recorded on the same channel with the offset carrier video signal. During monitoring and playback, the offset carrier is heterodyned to a television broadcast frequency or intermediate frequency and coupled into the television receiver. The same receiver may simultaneously supply video I.F. and audio F.M. signals for recording, and monitor offset carrier audio and video signals supplied to the recording head to facilitate recording adjustments.

Abstract: 1,152,721. Magnetic head. IIT RESEARCH INSTITUTE. 2 May, 1966, No. 19262/66. Heading G5R. In a magnetic head including a main or working core 10, an auxiliary core 20 is provided adjacent the main core for diverting residual flux produced by residual magnetism in the main core away from the head gap. A shunt return path is provided for the flux by the auxiliary core which is of low coercive force material. The auxiliary core may be separate from the working core 10 with the space therebetween 30 filled with a non-hardening material, e.g. silicon grease, or the auxiliary core 76, 77, Fig. 2C, may be integral with the working core 10c or the auxiliary core, Fig. 2A, may be formed of both separate 20a and integral 70a, 71a parts. The head may be supported in a pair of mounting blocks 241, 242, Fig. 6, of non- magnetic, electrically conducting material each of which is recessed to provide cavities 241b, 242b, which receive the toroidal head winding 275 and cavities 241a, 242a (not shown) in which the core halves are received and bonded. A keeper housing 260 is secured to the mounting blocks. Cross-field windings may be mounted on each pole tip, Figs. 8-10 (not shown), and one of the pole tips may be spaced from the tape path by a non-magnetic spacer, Fig. 11 (not shown).

Abstract: 1,214,328. Television signal recording; multiplex signalling; radio receiving circuits. IIT RESEARCH INSTITUTE. 3 Nov., 1967, No. 50173/67. Headings H3Q, H4F and H4L. In a magnetic recording system in which a recorded record medium is produced, the intermediate frequency audio carrier is separated from the video signals by means of a resonant circuit 15 and heterodyned 28 with a reference carrier signal to produce a lower frequency carrier which lies within the effective pass band of the magnetic recording system. This lower frequency audio modulated carrier is combined with the video signals and recorded on a single track of the magnetic tape. The recording audio carrier frequency is preferably an odd multiple of half line scanning frequency. The video signal may comprise a colour television signal, the frequency of the reference carrier signal being the chrominance subcarrier frequency. Upon playback the audio carrier is heterodyned with the reference carrier to produce the original I.F. audio carrier which may be applied directed to a television receiver together with the video signals. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 1,148,231.

Abstract: 1,235,402. Annealing magnetic materials. 11T RESEARCH INSTITUTE. June 26, 1969 [July 22, 1968j, No.32416/69. Headings C7A and C7N. [Also in Divisions B3 and G4-6] In the manufacture of magnetic head cores from a binary Fe-Si alloy containing 3 to 7% by weight of Si and less than 0À05% by weight of carbon (see also Divisions B3 and G5) the core 37, 38 Fig.4 is magnetically annealed by clamping it in a stainless steel ring Fig. 5 (not shown), looping over an electric conductor 30 in a chamber 31, heating to 2000F. for 3% Si and 2050 F. for 6À5% Si (i.e. above the Curie temperature) in a dry hydrogen atmosphere for 15 minutes, and allowing to cool over several hours, current being passed through the conductor 30 to set up the magnetic field as the core cools from 1500F. to 500F.

Abstract: 1,002,417. Electric recording. I.T.T. RESEARCH INSTITUTE. Feb. 21, 1962, No. 6781/62. Addition to 896,691. Heading G5R. [Also in Division H1] To prevent troubles due to corona discharges on the sharp edges of the electrodes operating at the critical potentials required by the charge injection process described in the parent Specification, one or preferably both of the electrodes are shrouded by dielectric material where the recording face of the electrode(s) faces the incoming record material. The electrodes, such as used in the parent apparatus, may be so improved, but in particular, where one of the electrodes is a row of pins in a write/read cathode-ray tube, Fig. 1, the pins 40 are supported in a bulge 43 in the tube face which covers their sides, while the counterelectrode used in Fig. 1 is a pad of graphited felt 80. The elongate knife-edge electrode 180 of Fig. 7 is shrouded in epoxy resin 183. The recording modulation of a standing D.C. bias is applied to the electrode 80 in Fig. 1 and steady potentials are applied to the grid, cathode and internal coating 23 of the tube, whereas the modulation is applied to the coating 23 in Fig. 7. The grid may alternatively be modulated (Fig. 2, not shown). In Fig. 1, the pins 40 provide the recording definition transversely and longitudinally of a polyterephthalate record tape 43 while in Fig. 7, the electrode 180 provides the longitudinal definition, the pins 40 being switched by a conventionally deflected electron beam 20 completing the recording current circuit to each pin in turn. To reduce noise on the record, the pins 40 are set in a conducting glass face-plate of high resistance so that pins not connected by the beam 20 relapse to a uniform non-recording potential. The pins 40, for better engagement with the beam, may have their inner ends shaped, Fig. 5, and the beam 20 may be of elongate crosssection, Fig. 4. Where a television signal is being recorded, a sound-track is recorced longitudinally of a tapeedge by electrodes 80, 81, Fig. 1. To record conventionally interlaced vision signals, a tube with two rows of pins 231, 232, Fig. 9, has two counter-electrodes 245, 246 and the beam 233 is deflected to scan each row alternately, the lines of a complete frame 260, 266 being assembled in the same region 271 of the tape, the alternate blank frames 272 being used for a second recording. The tape may be developed xerographically and used as a cinematograph film by virtue of the sprockets 276. All the above tubes may be used for playback by including a load resistor to detect beam current variations when a recorded tape is fed past the pins 40 (Fig. 2, not shown) or tubes usable for playback only may be used. In Fig. 15, a pin potential repels the beam to a collector 345; in Fig. 16 the beam 360, curved by a transverse magnetic field is deflected relatively to electrodes 370, 371; while in Fig. 17, the width of the beam at 395 results from deflection at 392 and chopper plates 385, 386. Secondary emission dyondes may also be included. An electric vision recording may be made on a tape carrying a magnetic sound stripe (Fig. 22, not shown).
