PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a vertical alignment type liquid crystal alignment agent which achieves compatibility between excellent coatability, and excellent vertical alignment properties of a formed liquid crystal alignment film. SOLUTION: The vertical alignment type alignment agent contains at least one polymer selected from a group of polyamic acids and imidized polymers thereof, the polyamic acids being each obtained by allowing a tetracarboxylic acid dianhydride to react with diamine containing a specific compound represented by a compound shown by formula (A) (wherein X is a single-bond, -CO- or methylene group, and R is a group based on γ-orizanol).
