    Abstract: A high TBN overbased metal sulfonate detergent is prepared by reacting a hydrocarbyl-substituted organic sulfonic acid or metal salt thereof with a basic alkali metal or alkaline earth metal compound in the presence of a mono-alcohol and a carboxylic acid and reacting this mixture with carbon dioxide to form a carbonated overbased metal sulfonate. The resulting overbased metal detergent has a metal equivalent to sulfonic acid substrate ratio of 5:1 to 27:1. The product thus prepared has improved viscometrics, filterability, and TBN:ash ratio. Lubricating compositions comprising said overbased detergent display reduced friction and wear performance. The invention further relates to methods of lubricating an internal combustion engine with a lubricant containing an overbased detergent prepared as described.

    Abstract: The present invention relates to a lubricating composition, particularly marine diesel engine lubricating compositions, comprising: (a) an oil of lubricating viscosity; (b) an asphaltene dispersant comprising an amide group, which may also contain a succinimide group, and which may optionally be used in combination with additional asphaltene dispersants that contain a cyclic headgroup that contains a nitrogen atoms where the additional asphaltene dispersants may also include a succinimide group; and (c) a detergent derived from an alkyl phenol. The invention further provides methods of using such compositions in the operation of engine, particularly marine diesel engines.

    Abstract: A marine diesel cylinder is lubricated using a lubricant having a total base number (TBN) of at least about 25, comprising an oil of lubricating viscosity and a metal-containing detergent component. Forty to 90 percent of the TBN derived from the metal-containing detergent component is provided by calcium detergent; 5 to 40 percent of the TBN by sodium detergent; and 5 to 45 percent by magnesium detergent. At least 50 weight percent of the total detergent substrate is sulfonate and less than 50 weight percent is monomeric or oligomeric substrate comprising one or more units of alkyl-substituted phenol having an alkyl group of 8 to 14 carbon atoms. The lubricant is useful when the marine diesel engine is fueled with a liquid fuel containing at least 2 ppm vanadium.
