    Abstract: To address the need for reducing call setup time without degrading the originator's service, a RAN (103) transmits a channel assignment message in a paging slot monitored by a target unit (113). The target unit responds to this channel assignment page indicating its availability and location within the RAN coverage area. The RAN then indicates the availability of the target unit to the calling unit (120) that originated the service request. In this way, the originator is able to proceed with the communication service, while the target completes its call setup.

    Abstract: Logic circuitry (409) constantly monitors a transmitter (410) to determine if the transmitter (410) is idle. Logic circuitry (409) suppresses all NAKs until data and other channel information is not being transmitted by the transmitter (410) and RF resources are not scarce. Additionally, logic circuitry (409) suppresses all NAKs until a predetermined number of NAKs has been buffered by the logic circuitry (409). More particularly, logic circuitry (409) determines when a number of NAKs will sufficiently fill an over-the-air frame. Once the predetermined number of NAKs has been collected, the logic circuitry (409) will generate the appropriate NAKs.

    Abstract: An apparatus and method for optimizing the transition of a Mobile Station (MS) between states of operation for packet data service. An RF connection is established between the MS and Base Site Equipment (BS) for the transmission of data packets. After a period of inactivity of transmission, the RF connection is released and the BS provides the MS with the equipment identifier of the network element that will maintain the connection with a PDSN. The MS retains the identifier while in the Dormant state and a new Semi-Dormant state and sends the identifier to the BS when requesting reactivation. In the Dormant state, the network element maintaining the connection to the PDSN is the PCF. In the Semi-Dormant state, the network element maintains the connection between to the PDSN is the SDU. When the BS has data to transmit to a MS in the Semi-Dormant state, it channel assigns the MS into the Active state according to pilots reported in RF Measurement Report Messages previously received from the MS.

    Abstract: Various embodiments are described for establishing a group call session serially. After receiving a serial group call request from a remote unit (101), fixed network equipment (FNE) (201) selects a first subset of members (260) from the targeted group (250) of units and signals those members to join the group call session. Various techniques for selecting the first subset may be employed depending on what system benefits are desired. A second subset of members (270) from the targeted group of units is also selected and signaled to join the session. This second subset may be used to invite additional units in order to achieve a maximum number of group participants. Alternatively, the second subset may be used to invite a different unit (or units) to participate. This can be triggered by a user request to invite another subset to the group session, as could occur when the user is not able to resolve the particular matter at-hand with the group members of the first subset.

The controller may also receive (410) via the larger than anticipated allocation of the communication resource both an anticipated initial data transmission and an initial user data transmission in a first data transmission from the mobile wireless unit.

    Abstract: In a CDMA wireless communication system (200) a dispatch call can be established between two CDMA mobile stations (202, 226), or between other mobile stations and the CDMA mobile station, or between a CDMA mobile station and a computer(236) located outside of the wireless system. To reduce the delay normally association with call set up in a CDMA system, a dispatch processing network (128, 144) is provided in addition to a telephony switch (118). Dispatch calls and call set up requests are routed to the dispatch processing network from the radio access network (110) which includes base stations (204, 206). Once a dispatch call request is made, while the dispatch processing network begins setting up a traffic channel for the originating mobile communication device, the target is also paged, and upon responding, set up on a traffic channel. The concurrence of establishing radio links with the target and originating communication devices substantially reduces dispatch call set up time.
