Abstract: A method improves the decoding rate and reliability of adjacent cell base stations by expediting the decode process if the signal quality of a traffic channel is within a predetermined range. In particular, adjacent control channels are monitored and decoded at a rapid rate by ignoring the speech traffic channel information. The speech is interrupted (526) and the channel information is decoded (526) when, for example, the bit error rate or frame error rate of the traffic channel (TCH) is deteriorating while another channel has a better signal. The scheduling of speech channel interruptions (522) may also occur when insufficient neighbor cell information is available at the beginning of a call or immediately after handover. The lost speech signal could be recovered (536) using conventional speech extrapolation techniques.

Abstract: A communication system having a site employing a plurality of communication channels. Each channel is assigned a desired received signal strength threshold. A channel is assigned to a subscriber unit based upon the strength of the signal received at the site and the power control range of the subscriber unit. The selection of a channel may be performed either by the site or the subscriber unit. In an FDMA environment, each separate frequency division channel may be assigned different received signal strength thresholds. In a non-overlapping time interval (TDMA) environment, each separate time division channel may be assigned different received signal strength thresholds. In another embodiment, a combination of FDMA and TDMA environments can be used.

Abstract: A code division multiple access (CDMA) communication system reduces interference by reducing the encoding rate for selected mobiles. Abstract: An equalization system for equalizing a corrupted signal is disclosed. The equalization system includes a complex matched filter (400) and a maximum likelihood sequence estimator (MLSE) (405) for removing the effects of phase shift, amplitude variations, intersymbol interference, etc. resulting from multi-pathing and noise contributed by the receiver front end. The system estimates a correlation signal C(t) (505) and synchronizes C(t) 505 to maximize its energy as seen on the taps of the complex matched filter (400). Taps having amplitude coefficients below a predetermined threshold are set to zero to produce a modified CIR estimate. The modified CIR estimate which has had the effects of noise virtually eliminated, is then used to construct the complex matched filter (400) and is also used as input to the MLSE (405) to produce a better equalized data signal.

Abstract: A method of communication handover from a first communication entity (33) to a second communication entity (43) in a communication system (10) where a communication unit (80), communicating with a transceiver (23) associated with the second communication entity, is linked to the first communication entity. The invention provides for establishing a communication link between the communication unit and the second communication entity while maintaining a communication link between the communication unit and the first communication entity. Then, communications are substantially simultaneously transferred to the second communication entity while terminated from the first communication entity.
