Abstract: An illustrative example elevator system includes a hoistway that establishes a vertical pathway. The hoistway has an interior border established by a plurality of stationary boundaries that each have a height aligned with a vertical length of the hoistway. Each of the stationary boundaries has a width generally perpendicular to the height. An elevator car is within the hoistway. At least one vertically extending load bearing assembly includes a plurality of elongated load bearing members extending along a vertical path and facilitating movement or support of the elevator car. At least one hoistway liner assembly is situated in the hoistway. The hoistway liner assembly includes a plurality of bumpers that each have an axis that is generally perpendicular to the vertical length of the hoistway. The axes of at least two of the bumpers are non-parallel. The bumpers collectively establish a protected area sufficient for preventing contact between the load bearing assembly and the interior border of the hoistway if there is lateral movement of any of the load bearing members relative to the vertical path in at least two generally perpendicular directions.

Abstract: Methods and systems for monitoring a dynamic compensation control system of an elevator system are provided. The methods and systems include monitoring a first motion state sensor signal generated by a first motion state sensor, the first motion state sensor associated with an elevator machine, monitoring a second motion state sensor signal generated by a second motion state sensor, the second motion state sensor located on an elevator car, determining an operational status of the second motion state sensor based on an analysis of the first motion state sensor signal and the second motion state sensor signal, and when it is determined that a failure status of the second motion state sensor is present, the method further comprises deactivating a dynamic compensation control mode of operation of the elevator system.

Abstract: An elevator system, having: a hoistway, a pit; a car; a sensor assembly, configured to capture and process images, configured to form a VSN around a first area that is exterior to the car, a safety chain configured to: monitor a change in positioning of a stationary object that is external to the car to determine a measured speed of the car, and upon detecting that an object has breached the VSN, the sensor assembly is configured to: select a first response protocol, from a set of response protocols that are correlated to different measured speeds of the car; and execute the first response protocol.

Abstract: A safety net system is provided for an elevator system that includes an elevator pit and a ladder adjacent to an elevator pit wall for accessing the elevator pit. The safety net system includes a sensor and a processor. The sensor is arranged in a plane between the ladder and the elevator pit wall and is configured to perform sensing to sense an object disposed along the plane and to generate data corresponding to results of the sensing. The processor is operably coupled to the sensor and is configured to analyze the data and to determine whether the data is indicative of a person standing on the ladder based on analysis results.

Abstract: A method of monitoring a tie-down compensation of an elevator system includes positioning one or more sensor assemblies in a hoistway of the elevator system. The sensor assemblies are configured to monitor a position of the tie-down compensation in the hoistway. The tie-down compensation has a compensation member of the elevator system routed therethrough. A distance between a fixed location in the hoistway and the tie-down compensation is measured via the sensor assemblies, and the measured distance is compared to a threshold distance. One or more actions is taken based on a result of the comparison.

Abstract: An elevator system includes a hoistway, an elevator car configured to travel in the hoistway, and a pit located at a bottom of the hoistway. A safety chain is configured to enable or disable motion of the elevator car, and a sensor assembly is configured to initiate opening the safety chain to disable motion of the elevator car upon detection of a person in a detection region of the sensor assembly in the hoistway. A test device is configured to test operation of the sensor assembly to detect malfunctioning and/or tampering of operation of the sensor assembly.

Abstract: An illustrative example embodiment of an elevator compensation assembly includes a tie down mechanism and at least one compensation sheave that has an outer surface configured to engage at least one compensation rope member. At least one damper is associated with the tie down mechanism for resisting vertical movement of the tie down mechanism in at least one direction. At least one detector directly detects vertical movement of the tie down mechanism along the direction and provides an output indicating at least one characteristic of the detected vertical movement.
