    Abstract: Provided is an encoding device which can reduce the encoding distortion as compared to the conventional technique and can obtain a preferable sound quality for auditory sense. In the encoding device, a shape quantization unit (111) quantizes the shape of an input spectrum with a small number of pulse positions and polarities. The shape quantization unit (111) sets apulse amplitude width to be searched later upon search of the pulse position to a value not greater than the pulse amplitude width which has been searched previously. A gain quantization unit (112) calculates a gain of a pulse searched by the shape quantization unit (111) for each of bands.Figure 1

A multistage vector quantization unit (102) treats a number of candidates N which are designated prior to operation in the first-stage vector quantization unit (201-1), decrements the number of candidates by one beginning with the second-stage vector quantization unit (201-2 - 201-J) and continuing with each stage thereafter, and, if the number of candidates is three or less, assesses the quantization distortion at each such stage, treating the number of candidates at the following stage as a predetermined value P if the quantization distortion is greater than a prescribed threshold, and treating the number of candidates at the following stage as a value Q that is less than the predetermined value P if the quantization distortion is less than or equal to the predetermined threshold.

    Abstract: A vector quantizer which improves the accuracy of vector quantization in switching over a vector quantization codebook on a first stage depending on the type of feature having the correlation with a quantization target vector. In the vector quantizer, a classifier (101) generates classification information representing a type of narrowband LSP vector having the correlation with wideband LSP (Line Spectral Pairs) out of the plural types. A first codebook (103) selects one sub-codebook corresponding to the classification information as a codebook used for the quantization of the first stage from plural sub-codebooks (CBa1 to CBan) corresponding to each of the types of narrowband LSP vectors. A multiplier (107) multiplies the quantization residual vector of the first stage inputted from an adder (104) by a scaling factor corresponding to the classification information out of plural scaling factors stored in a scaling factor determining section (106) and outputs it to an adder (109) as the quantization target of a second stage.

In a distortion minimizing unit (112) of a CELP encoding device: a maximum correlation value calculation unit (221) calculates a correlation value by using each pulse and a target signal in each candidate position for four pulses constituting the fixed codebook so as to acquire a maximum value of the correlation value for each pulse and calculates a maximum correlation value by using the maximum value of the correlation value; a sorting unit (222) divides the four pulses into two subsets each having two pulses; and a search unit (224) performs a division search on the fixed codebook and acquires a code indicating the positions and polarities of the four pulses where the encoding distortion is minimum.
