Abstract: A direct-view display comprises a transparent substrate and an array of MEMS light modulators formed on the transparent substrate, wherein each of the light modulators can be driven into at least two states. A control matrix is formed on the transparent substrate for transmitting data and actuation voltages to the array. A controller controls the states of each of the light modulators in the array by obtaining a plurality of sub-frame data sets from a memory, wherein the plurality of sub-frame data sets correspond to an image frame, and each sub-frame data set indicates desired states of light modulators in multiple rows and multiple columns of the array. The controller outputs the plurality of sub-frame data sets according to a changeable output sequence, stored at least partially in memory to drive light modulators into the states indicated in the sub-frame data sets. The output sequence include timing values for events related to the setting of light modulators into desired states for at least two of the plurality of sub-frame data sets.

Abstract: The invention relates to spatial light modulators for use in display apparatus. In particular, the invention relates to spatial light modulators that include a substrate defining a plane and a shutter suspended over the substrate by a compliant beam. The compliant beam has a cross-sectional thickness, in a dimension parallel to the plane of the substrate, between about 0.2µm and about 10µm. In one embodiment, a thickness of the compliant beam in a dimension perpendicular to the plane of the substrate is at least about 1.4 times the cross-sectional width of the compliant beam in the dimension parallel to the plane of the substrate.
