Abstract: A method of broadcasting data in a wireless broadcast network, comprising multiplexing data for a wide-area transmission onto a first transmission span, the wide-area transmission being sent from a plurality of transmitters in the network; multiplexing data for a local transmission onto a second transmission span, wherein the multiplexing is onto frequency subbands pseudo-randomly selected from among all usable frequency subbands and the local transmission being sent from a subset of the plurality of transmitters; selecting the first and second transmission spans based on an amount of data to broadcast for the wide-area transmission and an amount of data to broadcast for the local transmission; and broadcasting the local and wide-area transmissions via a wireless link, wherein the data for the wide-area transmission and the data for the local transmission are time division multiplexed (TDM) at each base station, and wherein the first and second transmission spans are first and second time segments, respectively, of a frame of a predetermined time duration as well as a corresponding system.

Abstract: A method of transmitting a base stream of data and an enhancement stream of data in a wireless communication system, comprising: coding and modulating the base stream to obtain a first data symbol stream, wherein the base stream is designated to be received by a plurality of receiving entities; coding and modulating the enhancement stream to obtain a second data symbol stream, wherein the enhancement stream is designated to be received by at least one receiving entity, and wherein the coding and modulating for the base and enhancement streams are not dependent on channel realizations of receiving entities for the base and enhancement streams; processing the first data symbol stream in accordance with a first spatial processing scheme to obtain a first plurality of symbol substreams; processing the second data symbol stream in accordance with a second spatial processing scheme to obtain a second plurality of symbol substreams, wherein the processing for the first and second data symbol streams is not dependent on the channel realizations of the receiving entities for the base and enhancement streams; and combining the first plurality of symbol substreams with the second plurality of symbol substreams to obtain a plurality of transmit symbol streams for transmission from a plurality of transmit antennas.

Abstract: Techniques for transmitting data in a wireless communication system (100) are described. Physical channels to be sent in a super-frame are identified and allocated time slots in the super-frame. The coding and modulation for each physical channel are selected based on its capacity. The data for each physical channel is selectively encoded based on an outer code rate, e.g., for a Reed-Solomon code, and further encoded based on an inner code rate, e.g., for a Turbo code. The encoded data for each physical channel is mapped to modulation symbols based on a selected modulation scheme. The modulation symbols for each physical channel are further processed (e.g., OFDM modulated) and multiplexed onto the time slots allocated to the physical channel. Data to be sent using another radio technology (e.g., W-CDMA) is also processed and multiplexed onto time slots allocated for this radio technology.

Abstract: To transmit data in a manner to mitigate the deleterious effects of delay spread, the expected coverage areas for multiple transmissions to be sent in multiple time slots are initially determined. Cyclic prefix lengths for these transmissions are selected based on the expected coverage areas. The cyclic prefix length for each transmission may be selected from among a set of allowed cyclic prefix lengths based on the expected coverage area for that transmission, the pilot staggering used for the transmission, and so on. For example, a shorter cyclic prefix length may be selected for each local transmission, and a longer cyclic prefix length may be selected for each wide-area transmission. The selected cyclic prefix lengths may be signaled to the terminals. The transmissions are processed (e.g., OFDM modulated) based on the selected cyclic prefix lengths. The cyclic prefix lengths may be selected periodically, e.g., in each super-frame.
