    Abstract: 27,606. Wright, J. Dec. 1. Stopping machinery by movement of guards. -A guard, carried by and moving in advance of the reciprocating plunger of a press, actuates a trip-device for stopping the press when the guard comes in contact with the hand of an operator or other obstruction. A fixed guard is also provided to compel an operator to manipulate the work on the lower die from below the level of its face, and a spring-controlled work-stripper is carried by the plunger in advance of the reciprocating tool. The guard 15, Figs. 2 and 3, of suitable shape is attached to a rod 19 held in a block 20 carried by a pivot 22 on the reciprocating plunger. The rod 19 has a nose 21 which reciprocates through a slot 57 in a trip-bar 54 resting on a bracket 36 fixed to the frame of the machine. When the end 66 of the guard 15 comes in contact with the fingers of the operator or other obstruction on the lower die 3, Fig. 2, the rod 19 is rocked on the pivot 22 and the nose 21 acting on the end 57 of the slot 57 causes the bar 54 to move horizontally and rock the levers 48, 48 through the rock-shaft 39 and links. 36, 62. The levers 48, 48 normally support a curved strap 47, to which are attached spring plungers 42 guided by openings 41 in a block 40. When the strap 47 is released, the plungers advance and grip the dog controlling the operation of the clutch and also act as a retarding-device, thus stopping the press. The plungers 42 may be toothed or serrated at the end to augment their grip, and the rod 19 guided by a roller on a spring-controlled arm 28 and rollers 35, 56. The guard 131, 134, 137, Figs. 7 and 8, is fixed to the press with the bar 137 level with the. face of the lower die 3. Fig. 2, and the operator, in order to avoid contact with the guard 15 and stopping the machine, is compelled to manipulate the work from below the bar 137.

    Abstract: 4633. Wright, J., and Wright, H. Feb. 24. Spindle apparatus.- In spinning, doubling, twisting, and like frames that have a stationary ring-rail, a rotary tube 3, mounted on a dead spindle, drives the bobbin by means of a friction washer 5, and is traversed by a lifter rail 8 or by the spindle-rail 14. The ring has a flange 13 which contacts with the thread passing from the traveller to the spindle and produces a more even and stronger yarn. The spindle is of such length that when the bobbin is in its lowest position it does not interfere with the passage of the thread between the guide-eye and the ring.
