Abstract: FISHING LURE A weed protector has a body of flexible foam material. The hook portions of the fishing hooks pushes on the outer surface or extend into grooves in the body. When a fish strikes, it can collapse the form exposing the barbed ends of the hooks to the fish's mouth. The body can compress axially to accommodate different sized shanks. The shanks of the hook are attached by a ring to a connector which extends out of the front end of the body, and the flexible foam material permits the connector and the hook to pivot somewhat with respect to each other. The front end of the body is tapered to deflect weed and other debris. The frontmay have a separate, hard cap that prevents weeds from engaging the front of thebody.

Abstract: A sheet 20 of plastics or glass is internally illuminated by light entering solely from its edges. Light is refracted to eminate from the face 21 through a matrix of indentations 31-33. The indentations 31-33 can be coloured red, green and blue if required. Each indentation is overlaid with a liquid crystal cell addressed individually by address lines 13, 23. The indentations may be replaced by pimple-like eruptions.

Abstract: 12,307. Thomas, J. May 24. Fire-extinguishing by steam; sprinkling- systems, non-automatic. - Relates to apparatus of the kind described in Specification 2243/09, for extinguishing fires in ships and buildings, and consists in arrangements for the employment of water together with steam as the fireextinguishing agent. In the system shown in Fig. 2, steam from a boiler E' is led through a pipe B to pipes S' along the sides of the deck, from which branch-pipes P , P , P lead to perforated pipes I N', I N , I N in the various compartments of the ship. Water is supplied to the perforated pipes through branch pipes P , P , P from pipes communicating with tanks T'. In a system for factories &c., the steam and water are led simultaneously into small cisterns, each provided with a water valve and a steam valve, which are connected together, so that the action of the steam on the steam valve opens the water valve, the steam assisting in forcing the water along the perforated pipes. In another system, the water pipes open into the steam pipes, which are supplied with steam through hose from a portable boiler.

Abstract: 1742. Thomas, J. Jan. 25. Locking key wedges and barb, toothed, and like holding-devices for socket fixings. - In miners' axes and like tools having the end of the helve socketed in an eye of the tool blade, and having provision for the easy separation of the two parts, the flattened end of the handle 1 is enveloped in an iron or other metal ferrule 2 and provided with a semicircular or rectangular tapering recess corresponding with the projection 5 within the eye of the blade 4. The two parts are held securely in engagement by driving-in a metal wedge 6 between the helve and end wall 7 of the eye. Loss of the wedge is prevented by the engagement of pins 8 thereon with grooves 9, which are deflected at 10 to permit of the wedge being turned up clear of the helve.
