Abstract: An elongate metallurgical lance (27) for injecting solid particulate material into molten material held within a vessel (11) is disclosed. The lance includes a central core tube (31) through which to pass solid particulate material, an annular cooling jacket (32) surrounding the central core tube throughout a substantial part of its length, a coolant inlet means (52), and a coolant outlet means (53). An outer wall of a forward end section of the jacket is formed from a first material which has high heat transfer properties and can withstand external temperatures above 1100° C. for prolonged periods when the jacket is cooled by coolant flow. An outer wall of a body section of the jacket is formed from a second material that maintains its structural properties when exposed to external temperatures above 1100° C. for prolonged periods when the jacket is cooled by coolant flow, whereby the outer wall acts as a structural member that contributes to supporting the lance at these temperatures. The outer wall of the forward end section and the outer wall of the body section are welded together.

Abstract: A metallurgical lance 27 for injecting solid particulate material into a smelting vessel comprising a central core tube 31 through which to deliver the solids material and an annular cooling jacket 32 surrounding the central core tube. Jacket 32 includes a long hollow annular structure 41 formed by outer and inner tubes 42, 43 interconnected by a front end connector 44. An elongate tubular structure 45 is disposed within the hollow annular structure 41 so to divide the interior of structure 41 into an inner annular water flow passage 46 and an outer annular water flow passage 47. Tubular structure 45 has a forward end piece 49 which fits within front end connector 44 of structure 41 to form an annular end flow passage 51 which interconnects the forward ends of water flow passage 46, 47. Cooling water flows forwardly down the lance through inner passage 46 then outwardly and back around the forward annular end passage 51 into the outer passage 47 through which it flows backwardly along the lance to an outlet 53. The effective cross-sectional area for water flow through end passage 51 is less than the cross-sectional flow area of both the inner and outer passages 46, 47 to produce a high water flow rate in the tip region of the cooling jacket.

Una pared exterior de una seccion del extremo delantero, de la chaqueta, esta formada de un primer material que tiene propiedades de alta transferencia de calor, y puede soportar temperaturas externas por arriba de 1100 °C, por periodos prolongados, cuando la chaqueta es enfriada por el flujo de refrigerante. Una pared exterior de una seccion de cuerpo de la chaqueta esta formada de un segundo material que mantiene sus propiedades estructurales cuando se expone a temperaturas externas por arriba de 1100 °C por periodos prolongados, cuando la chaqueta es enfriada por el flujo de refrigerante, por lo cual la pared exterior actua como un miembro estructural que contribuye a soportar la lanza a estas temperaturas. Abstract: A lance for injecting a pre-heated oxygen-containing gas into a vessel containing a bath of molten material is disclosed. The lance (26) includes a n elongate gas flow duct (31) from which to discharge gas from the duct. The duct includes (i) inner and outer concentric carbon steel tubes (37, 39) whi ch provide major structural support for the duct, (ii) cooling water supply and return passage means (43, 44) extending through the duct wall from the rear end to the forward end of the duct for supply and return of cooling water to the forward end of the duct, and (iii) a mechanical means in the form of lan ds (136) on the exterior surface of the duct adapted to hold a layer of frozen slag on the duct. The lance also includes a gas inlet (32) for introducing h ot gas into the rear end of the duct. The lance also includes a tip means (36) joined to the concentric tubes at the forward end of the duct. The lance als o includes a protective lining formed from a refractory or other material that is capable of protecting the duct from exposure to gas flow at 800-1400 ~C through the duct. The lining is a non-metallic material with heat insulating properties when compared to the steel tubes. The lance also includes a swirl means (34) located in the duct for imparting swirl to gas flow through the forwardend of the duct.

Abstract: Apparatus for injecting gas into a vessel comprises a lance 26 having a gas flow duct 31 extending longitudinally from a rear end to a forward end (36) from which to discharge gas from the duct. An elongate body 38 disposed within the forward end of the duct is fitted with flow directing vanes 39 to impart swirl to the discharging gas. The tip 44 is internally cooled by water supplied and returned through supply and return passages 52, 56. Cooling water is also passed through internal cooling passages 66, 75, 76, 87 within vanes 39 and central body 38 via water supply and return passage 60 within the duct.
