Abstract: Reducing gas having a minimum molar ratio of (H2+CO)/(H2O+CO2) of 15, which is substantially free of additional H2O, is produced by (a) introducing into a reaction zone a charge comprising (I) a liquid hydrocarbon, (II) a temperature-controlling anhydrous gas mixture with a molar ratio (H2+CO)/(H2O+CO2) above 1, and (III) an oxidant selected from 95% oxygen, and oxygen-enriched air contng. at least 45% vol. of oxygen, the ratio of the oxygen atoms present in the oxidant to the carbon atoms present in the liquid hydrocarbon being 1.0-1.2, and the gas mixture (II) being fed at a temp. below 1,090 degrees C., and (b) reacting hydrocarbon (I) and oxidant (II) in the reaction zone at a temp. above 1,090 degrees C., and a pressure between atmospheric and 245 kg/cm2, in order to form a reducing gas comprising H2, CO and carbon particles, these particles being present in an amount of 0.01-10% wt. of the carbon in hydrocarbon (I). The process gives a highly reactive reducing gas for use in the reduction of metal oxides, in chemical synthesis, and as a combustible gas.
