Abstract: PURPOSE:To attain high-speed responsiveness by incorporating a charge transfer complex which contains an electron-donating component and electron-acceptive component in such a manner that the one component is an org. molecule having a pi electron conjugation system and which is formed in the ground state into the above material. CONSTITUTION:This third-order nonlinear optical material contains the charge transfer complex which contains the electron-donating component and electron- acceptive component selected respectively by one from the following groups in such a manner that at least one component thereof is the org. molecule having the pi electron conjugation system and which is formed in the ground state. (electron-acceptive component): cyano compd., quinones, nitro compd., acid anhydride, halogen, and carbon halide, (electron-donating component): unsatd. cyclic hydrocarbon compd., unsatd. heterocyclic compd., chalcogen containing compd., quaternary ionic unsatd. heterocyclic compd., metals. The element which is exceptionally outstanding in terms of the dependency on wavelengths and the input light intensity necessary for response time action is obtd. in this way.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain a large second order non-linear optical effect, and also, to raise the preservation stability by allowing the title material to have a large optical non-linearity consisting of a stilbene derivative. CONSTITUTION:The title material consists of a stilbene derivative shown by formula I, and has a large non-linearity of >=10 times of urea. In the formula I, D, A and R -R denote a Hammett's substituent constant sigmap and a donor property substituent selected from 0.2>=sigmap>-0.4 halogen, a Hammett's substitu ent constant sigmap and an acceptor property substituent selected from sigmaps>0.2, and hydrogen or arbitrary substituents, at least one of which is an asymmetrical substituent which has been led into an asymmetrical part, respectively. As a result, the center symmetric property in a bulk state, for instance, in a crystal state is broken down, and also, it is brought to orientation control to a bulk structure which can utilize a secondary optical non-linearity which a molecular has, and a large secondary non-linear optical effect can be obtained.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To increase a three-dimensional nonlinear optical effect by using a specific compd. CONSTITUTION:The compd. expressed by formula I is used as the titled material. In formula, D denotes an electron-donating group and is preferably an amino group and is more particularly preferably a mono- or dialkyl group or mono- or di(hydroxyalkyl) amino group. Xn indicates that any 1-4 pieces of the 2nd, 3rd, 5th and 6th positions are substd. with halogen; halogen is preferably chlorine or bromine. For example, the compd. expressed by formula II is synthesized by bringing N,N-diethyl-p-phenylenediamine and 2,5- dichloroterephtal aldehyde into reaction in the presence of the catalyst quantity of benzene sulfonic acid.

CONSTITUTION:The title org. nonlinear compd. is a compd. expressed by one of formulas I-IV. In formulas I-IV, each PHI1, and PHI2 is an aromatic or heteroaromatic ring; R is a fragment which forms a ring including two imine carbon atoms; M is a fragment bonded to two imine carbon atoms; P is a fragment which forms a ring including one imine carbon; each E1 and E2 is an acceptive substituent; each R1 and R2 is H or a 1-5C substituent. These compds. are obtd. by condensing a dicarboxylic acid with an amine mixed in alcohol or benzene in the presence of Lewis acid as catalyst. Thus, central symmetry in a bulk state, for example, in a crystal state of an org. compd. is destructed, and an org. nonlinear optical compd. exhibiting great nonlinear optical effect is obtd.

The high molecular material formed of hydrogen bonds to be used in the compsn. is, for example, hydroxyethyl cellulose, hydroxypropyl cellulose, polyamino acid, etc. The ferroelectric nonlinear optical material to be used is, for example, an inorg. compd. such as lithium niobate, etc. The org. nonlinear optical material contg. pi-electron system to be used in the compsn. is, for example, 2-methyl-4-nitroaniline, p-nitroaniline, 4-dimethylamino-3-acetamido-nitrobenzene, etc. In some cases, >=2 kinds of these compds. may be used in combination. By this constitution, a nonlinear optical material having high resistance to laser light is obtd.

CONSTITUTION:The high polymer compd. which has OMEGAcm the volume resistivity and >=0.4% the absorption coefficient measured by the JIS method is used to the titled material as the material which transmits or reflects the light. The material comprises the high polymer contg. the group having a hydrogen bond which is a hydroxyl group. And, said high polymer compd. has the durability against the laser having the large optical power density of >=100w/cm . Thus, the titled material is improved the durability against the large optical power.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain large optical nonlinearity by constituting the titled material of a specific benzylideneaniline deriv. CONSTITUTION:This optical material consists of the benzylideneaniline deriv. having at least one substituent having the function to control molecular orientation in the crystal in either of the positions where an electron donative substituent is substitutable in the 4-position and an electron withdrawing substituent is substitutable in the 4'-position and having the optical nonlinearity of >=10 urea ratio. The benzylideneaniline deriv. having a large superpolarization rate and dipolar moment as small as about the dipolar moment of a benzene deriv. is selected for the pi electron conjugate system and the molecular orientation control group is incorporated therein, by which the central symmetricity in the bulk state, for example, crystal state, is broken and further the molecules are controlled to be oriented to the bulk structure which can make effective use of the optical nonlinearity possessed by the molecules. The development of the optical nonlinearity not possible with the conventional materials is thereby permitted.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain a large-sized crystal of good quality and prevent deterioration of the grown crystal after pulling up from a solution, by producing an organic crystal using a solution prepared from an organic compound, polymer and a solvent capable of dissolving both. CONSTITUTION:A solution prepared from an organic compound, polymer and solvent capable of dissolving both are used to give an organic crystal. The above-mentioned polymer may be any soluble polymer, but a solvent in common with a crystallizable substance must be present. A mixed solvent of two or more solvents may also be used. The organic compound may be either one of hydrophilic or hydrophobic organic compounds, but the solvent capable of dissolving each of them must be selected. The crystal growth is preferably carried out in the solution to subsequently pull up the resultant crystal from the interior of the solution. The crystal is preferably pulled up in a state of the crystal surface coated with a polymer layer for protecting the crystal.
