    Abstract: A high density shirred casing stick comprises a tubular core and a cellulosic food casing length having a moisture content of at least 13 percent of the total casing weight, The stick may be produced by shirring casing 17 on mandrel 13 and compacting the shirred casing on hollow tubular core 31 by means of comparator 33. In other embodiments, the shirred casing is compacted on the shirring mandrel and subsequently doffed on to a tubular core, or the shirred casing is removed from the shirring apparatus on to a transport rod or mandrel and then placed on a core in a separate compacting apparatus, or the casing may be shirred on a core placed on a floating mandrel and then compacted on the core.
